I'm pretty much in love with Andrew Bird once again.
Tripod had this weird dinner-show setup- our "front row" seats were behind a cluster of round candlelit tables. THANKS TICKETMASTER!
Not to worry though, we still had a good view of Dosh's general aceness (which we were late for) and then Bird and Mr Unpronouncable Guitarist.
Oh, Andrew. <3 He was in full health this time, and I wasn't prepared for how amazing his voice really is live.
And he did Nervous Tic- at LAST. And Why?, after which Desmond turned to me and said "That's it! I'm gay." This seemed entirely fair.
He brought one of those huge plastic clocks that no-one knows the name for but everyone knows from every créche and playgroup they ever went to. And played the chicken sound over and over again before Spare-Ohs. <3
Oh oh, and he finished with Scythian Empire (no encore, despite our cries of "DR STRINGZ!!"- gutted.) and he'd looped a whole gorgeous intro when he pressed something with his stripey foot, and paused with a look of misery. "..I just erased the whole thing." Oh, Andrew. <3
Then when Clodagh was at the merch stand buying CDs (which, on closer inspection, both seemed to have been drop-kicked) because she's been converted to our ranks, Dosh appeared and leaned in beside her to ask the guy something, and she didn't even notice. Quality.
And then and then, we saw the Birdman himself, standing there like your average dude rather than a conduit of pure amazingness.
We all went up to him, because.. We couldn't walk away again after Crawdaddy. I had no voice to speak of- I should explain that I'd had a rising fever throughout the gig, which only improved it really.
He is a tiny little man, and absolutely beautiful.
Naturally we were all rendered witless and horribly unslick. Des kept it together enough to shake his hand (!) and say something coherent, I didn't manage more than to croak my name and produce a ticket for him to scrawl illegibly on.
Ahhhh well.
Vicki was hit particularly hard. "We have to go back.. I have to tell him I love him more than David Bowie!!"
Ah, Vicki. <3
..This was all weeks and weeks ago, oops.
