2011 in Fandom

Dec 23, 2011 11:25

I did this Year in Fandom meme last year, and it was really fun, so I decided to bring it back this year. And, well, I thought it might be interesting to see the evolution of my fangirliness.

Your main fandom of the year?
Yeah, it'll be Doctor Who again this year. I'm pretty sure it's the only thing I've followed with any regularity in 2011, and while I have my gripes, there were some good times in there, too.

Your favourite film watched this year?
Easy A. I know it came out last year, but I rented it on a whim this year and it just hit all the right notes. It's smart and funny and charming and yes.

Your favourite book read this year?
Oh, no question or hesitation on this one. Mira Grant's Feed is the best book I've read not just this year, but probably last year, too. I can't say enough good things about this book. *commences raving*

Your favourite album or song to listen to this year?
Let's see... Panic! At The Disco's Vices & Virtues came out this year, and although at first I was a little hesitant, because it's the first album they've released as a twosome rather than a four man group, I have listened to that album over and over. My big musical discovery for the year, though, was Amanda Palmer, through her live album Amanda Palmer Goes Down Under. She sings what she describes as "punk cabaret" and has a fantastic combination of wit and vulnerability about her. She recently married Neil Gaiman, and as weird as it sounds, in her live album I can hear the reasons they fit well together.

Your favourite TV show of the year?
The husband and I have taken to watching ABC's Once Upon A Time on Sunday nights. It's been pretty clever so far, modernizing and retelling fairy tales, breaking then fixing them. And someone in the casting department certainly earned their paycheque.

Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. Hey, don't judge me! I would probably never have given this show a chance if it weren't for a trusted source telling me about its awesome. It might be aimed at little girls, but this is a show that tapped into nostalgia and did it right. Also, I have two little girls and a little boy who will drop everything to watch it with me. Win.

Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
Oh, Doctor Who. Your lack of focus this year coupled with overly predictable plot twists made me sad. You could have been so much more.

Your TV boyfriend of the year?
Well, hello there, James McAvoy. (No, I don't care that he's in movies and not so much tv. Celebrity boyfriend is celebrity boyfriend.)

Your TV girlfriend of the year?
Liana K. I said it last year, and I'll say it this year: we likes the redheads. Especially when they're pretty and flirty and funny. (And in Liana's case, you can add smart, insightful, and geeky to that list.)

Your biggest squee moment of the year?
You know, I don't know that there was a big squee this year. There have been things to get enthusiastic about, but nothing really stands out as being big and gleeful and danceworthy.

The most missed of your old fandoms?
I've really been missing Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip lately. That show was so clever, so witty, it's not too surprising it didn't last longer than one season. They wrapped it up tightly and I do have it on DVD, but man, I wish there was more of it to be had.

The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
BBC's Sherlock. Oh yes, boys, I will get to you.
