Yes, it's a meme, but it's about books, therefore it's obviously an awesome meme. If a bit long.
1) What author do you own the most books by?
*toddles off to count*
Um, if it counts I have the complete works of Shakespeare. If it doesn't count, it's probably andpuff (Tanya Huff). She's prolific and I'm obssessive.
2) What book do you own the most copies of?
Um, I know there are a couple of Shakespearean plays I own two copies of. I also have two copies of a few books that were sent to me for review. Perhaps I should get around to reviewing them so I can do a giveaway...
3) Did it bother you that both those questions ended with prepositions?
Nope. I'm only a part-time grammar nazi.
4) What fictional character are you secretly in love with?
Erm... I think my last good fictional character crush was on Sebastian from Joanna Bourne's My Lord and Spymaster.
4a) What fictional character would you most like to be?
Some minor character who isn't responsible for the fate of the world or targeted by the bad guys. Preferably someone with a sense of humour who lives a long, happy life.
4b) What fictional character do you think most resembles you?
I dunno. I don't think I've ever read a book and thought "dude, x character is so exactly like me!" Um, let's go with Mirabar from Laura Resnick's In Legend Born. Loud, opinionated redhead go!
5) What book have you read the most times in your life?
Probably something from my childhood. Maybe CS Lewis's The Dawn Treader. It was my favourite of the Chronicles of Narnia, and I've read it a couple of times after reaching adulthood, too, so it's probably racked up the most re-reads over the years.
6) What was your favorite book when you were ten years old?
Oh geez, I have no idea. That was several lifetimes ago. Well, since I just mentioned I loved Voyage of the Dawn Treader around that age, I'll go with that.
7) What is the worst book you've read in the past year?
Liquid Soul by Matthew Carter. It had a really wonderful premise, but the book itself meandered pointlessly and missed any interesting ideas it brought up. I had to force myself to finish it, which is saying something because this was a really short novel.
8) What is the best book you've read in the past year?
In the past year? Hmm. Rick Yancey's The Monstrumologist stands out, both as something well written and as something I couldn't put down. (The two are not always the same.) Ann Aguirre's Shady Lady was really wonderful, too.
9) If you could force everyone you tagged to read one book, what would it be?
Because it's meaningful or because I think it's awesome? Either way, I dunno if there should be a required reading list. I'd rather people were matched with books they're going to love because of their personalities and interests. There's not much worse than being stuck reading something you hate because a trusted source raved about it. (Ok, there are plenty of worse things than that. But not from a 'selecting books to read' sort of perspective.)
10) Who deserves to win the next Nobel Prize for literature?
I... have no idea, actually.
11) What book would you most like to see made into a movie?
I've always wanted to see Tanya Huff's Keeper Chronicles make the jump to the screen. Patricia Briggs's Raven books would be wonderful as well.
12) What book would you least like to see made into a movie?
There are a number of books I think would make poor movie adaptations. Then again, I would have said Lord of the Rings was too slow to make a good movie, so what do I know?
13) Describe your weirdest dream involving a writer, book, or literary character.
A couple of years ago, I was assigned as Kelley Armstrong's liaison (ie: tourguide) while she was here for the local con. Day 2 of the con, I had this dream that I woke up to realize it was noon and panels had started at 10. Kelley was on the first panel of the day and as her liaison, I was meant to be there. I was in a panic and my husband didn't seem to think it was a big deal, just kind of "oh well, guess we'll be late." I was so angry with him for being so unhelpful as he sauntered around, getting the kids ready to head to their grandparents' for the day. I was running full speed to the hotel the convention was being held at when I woke up and realized not only was it a dream, it was only 7am. It took me nearly half an hour to stop being mad at my husband for his attitude in the dream.
14) What is the most lowbrow book you've read as an adult?
Heh, I read Pirate. It was written by Fabio. 'Nuff said.
15) What is the most difficult book you've ever read?
I couldn't connect with Dickens, despite multiple attempts, so he gets my vote for most difficult.
16) What is the most obscure Shakespeare play you've seen?
I've seen surprisingly few Shakespearean plays, actually.
17) Do you prefer the French or the Russians?
Erm, whoever writes a better story?

I haven't read any Roth, so I guess Updike wins.

22) What is the biggest or most embarrassing gap in your reading?
There are a lot of "classic" sci fi or fantasy authors I haven't delved into. Even some of the more modern cornerstones I haven't tried yet, but part of this is to blame on the fact that I spend most of my reading time on books to be reviewed, so when I do have a chance to pick up something on a whim, it's not going to be a huge doorstopper with eleventy thousand other volumes behind it.
23) What is your favorite novel?
It fluctuates according to my mood. And what happens to catch my eye on the shelf at that time. I have a lot of books I really love.

I love Much Ado About Nothing and The Importance of Being Earnest.

Shakespeare's got a few wonderful sonnets. (He gets mentioned a lot here, doesn't he?)

It's been so long since I've read an essay that I can't think of when the last one was.

I'm not often a fan of short stories. They usually leave me wanting more. I tend to prefer the character development and worldbuilding of novels.

I don't read a lot of non-fiction, but The Courtesan's Revenge by Frances Wilson was pretty fascinating.
29) Who is your favorite writer?
I have a short list of authors I stalk! So far, my stalking has proved surprisingly successful and I can call a number of my former stalkees friends. Apparently authors understand the obsessive thing and don't feel the need to flee from my rabid fangirl self.
30) Who is the most overrated writer alive today?
Stephenie Meyer. No explanation necessary.
31) What is your desert island book?
Can I cheat and grab a big anthology? Ooooh, or my e-book reader. Yesss. And, uh, a way to charge it.

I'm working on Jane Eagland's Wildthorn. Something about asylums in historical fiction fascinates me. Guess I'm a sucker for a gothic setting.
