Delusions of Grandeur on Independance Day

"Power has a way of undermining judgment, of planting delusions of grandeur in the minds of otherwise sensible people and otherwise sensible nations." - Senator J. William Fulbright, 1966

The subject of singers Mariah Carey and R.Kelly's road to fame came up between an aquaintance and I. Despite Mariah's foot-long train and Kelly's statement in a recent song that he's "the king of R&B", neither seem capable to become the wax, or even to raise a candle to the legends of the blues to motown era such as Etta James and, say, Shuggie Otis.

Yet, they are legends in our elite society. You've gotta hand it to celebrities, and the ability to make a name for themsleves. Their feelings of supremacy enables them to acquire millions. It's almost as if, In thinking you're better than others, you sort of...become.

And is this a problem, exactly? Is there something wrong with self-confidence, the American in us all?
