Okay so my back only hurts a little now. I've cooled off alot from yesterday and am feeling not bad. So don't mind the previous rant because I've got a whopper today.
I had burnt myself a CD last night and was listening to some of my current favorites in j-pop, humming ever so often and bouncing my head to the beat. My brother had walked in and took my headphones ready to listen to what I was so in to. Before she even put it on her head she heard the beat buzzing through the headphones and said "Is that Green Day?" I was a little shocked and said "No, I'm not listening to English" Of coarse she knows if I'm not listening to English I'm obviously listening to some J-pop. Needless to say she didn't care to listen to it and said "it was a waste of a CD to put that crap on it" as she left the room. Nothing new, since my brother seems to have some phobia of all things not English, especially Japanese. I guess it's because Japanese words sound pretty much nothing like English, so it's hard to make any sort of connection.
Anyways, that reminded me of the time I was listening to Melissa by Porno graffiti in my room. My mom was in there getting something and thought I was listening to some Italian music. My brother said it was "eww" Japanese and said how the singer was trying to sound Spanish or Italian. My mom agreed and I got some strange looks. hmm, funny because thats the way he sounds naturally.
That got me thinking. What are people expecting when they think of the Japanese music? Were suppost to be diverse in Canada and in America yet when we hear a foreign language we just can't wrap our mind around it. Music is just music, regardless of language. Japan is the second largest music industry after America and is alot bigger than Canada's. No joke.
It's stupid because I have a feeling had I never mentioned it was Japanese and continued to let my family belive it was Spanish or Italian or whatever, they probably would've let there walls down and actually started to like and enjoy the music. Not that there stopping me from doing it, but it would be nice to have someone not make me feel like I'm an alien for wanting listening to it.
I wonder if there's any hope for the future fans out there, whether they are fans of Japanese music, animation or games. I hope one day the majority realises it's not so weird, or geeky and stupid.
Enjoy things for what they are and not for where there origins are from or what language it's in. When they let there prejudices or stigmas down they might just be surprised.
...Yep so this is my big rant for today. Hope it made sense! Until I next write.
Bye, Sayonara!
