At Carolina's insistance, Nick decided to go see his parents. One rental car and a couple hours later, he was in Dallas. He sat in the driveway, staring up at the house he'd grown up in. There were so many good memories there, but many bad memories as well.
He'd spent a few weeks on medical leave in that house, whimpering in bed, tossing and turning. The kidnapping of the youngest Stokes resulted in a sort of family reunion with all the siblings gathering in their childhood home. Their gatherings were usually festive and centered around holidays or special events, but this one had been different. Nick can still hear them crying. It was the worst few weeks of his life.
Nick hadn't called his parents to let them know he was coming. He really didn't want them to fuss. He took out his cell phone and dialed the number to the house.

It rang a couple times before Nick flipped the phone shut. He realized that his parents weren't going to pick up. They were both at work.
Feeling relieved, he got out of the car and found his key to the house. He unlocked the door and walked it. It was quiet. Pictures of all them were hanging on the walls. The one that stood out was a picture of his dad's 60th birthday. They'd thrown their father a surprise party. It was a good party.
Looking at the photo reminded Nick about something. He took out his phone and called up Sara.
