There are no worry-lines on her face when sleeps now, he realizes. In this moment, she is unguarded and open and vulnerable, but she is simultaneously closed off from the rest of the world. The stress that fills her waking moments (the concern over Stefan’s whereabouts and his state of being, among other secondary things) is (thankfully) nowhere to be found in her slumbering features. He knows because his ice-blue eyes have traced the lines of her face and the curves of her (clothed, thank you very much) body more than once the past several nights, and there is no lingering tension to be found.
It hasn’t been this way for long. At first, after Stefan left, she wouldn’t sleep more than a few minutes at a time. She’d sit on the couch and nod off; she’d tense at every little sound; she’d jump every time her cellphone would beep or buzz. What little sleep she did get was full of nightmares, and he knows because he watched over her then, too.
She’s snoring very softly, the sound barely audible. Instead of finding it unattractive, he thinks it’s kind of cute-oddly endearing. Perhaps recent events have softened him somewhat, and made him more vulnerable as well.
(So he’d like to think, but in reality, it all boils down to her, doesn’t it?)
She’s warm (in a way that he isn’t anymore); he can feel her body heat through his shirt, against his skin. It’s almost like how it was the night he was dying (for the second and supposedly last time), except this is better in its own way. For one, he isn’t suffering any physical pain, and he isn’t pouring sweat or mumbling nonsensical things that shouldn’t matter (but they mattered to her, even if only for a moment).
The flip side of the coin is that she isn’t aware that she’s pressed up against him yet. When he was dying, she came to him willingly, of her own accord. No trickery necessary. She held him, and because of her, his death would have been peaceful.
However, it wasn’t meant to be, and he can’t say that he isn’t grateful. Dying once was and is quite enough for him.
This, too, is peaceful in its own way. She isn’t shedding any tears for him right now, and she isn’t shedding any tears for his brother (she’s shed plenty for the both of them, but he’s certain that there will be more to come for Stefan). Right now, she isn’t the ill-fated doppelganger searching for the vampire boyfriend that doesn’t want to be found; right now, she’s just a young woman catching up on some much-needed sleep. Also, she just happens to be cuddled against Damon’s side.
He wants to be selfish and let her stay just like this for a little while longer-he wants to slide an arm around her, even. He wants to be unselfish and let her sleep for as long as she wants.
But he’s had his moment of guilty pleasure and she’s had at least six hours of sleep. Besides, he has information that he knows she wants, and she’d be pissed if he were to make her wait for it.
“Rise and shine, sleepyhead.”
The resultant shock and obvious indignation aren’t nearly as pleasant as the feel of her body pressed against his, but her reaction makes him smile all the same.

I would have liked to make this longer, but Damon was frustratingly uncooperative.
