Alphonse had always been clumsy-prone to bumping into furniture and tripping over rocks, and in this case, tumbling down the big hill between school and home.
Edward tumbled down after him, though not by accident. He did it on purpose, and skinned his knees along the way.
“You all right?” he asked Al at the bottom, checking and making sure there were no obvious injuries.
Al dried his tears and nodded. He would have bruises tomorrow, but he was fine. He pointed at Ed’s bloody knees and asked, “Why’d you do that?”
Ed looked at him like he was stupid. “You’re my brother. That’s why.”
From that day on, whenever Ed would do something reckless on Al’s part (like give Al his own jacket while he sat shivering in the cold, or give Al more than his share of food while he nearly let himself starve), Al always asked why. Ed’s answer was always the same.
The night they tried to bring back their mother and wound up nearly losing everything, Al didn’t ask why.
Ed was broken and bleeding and curled close against the metal shell that Al’s soul was now housed within. Looking solemnly up at Al, he gave an answer to the unasked question, raising his remaining bloodied hand and pressing it to the empty place where Al’s heart wasn’t.
“That’s why.”
On that night, Alphonse realized that a vacant suit of armor couldn’t cry.
That didn’t stop him from wanting to try, though.
