Little White Lies
“It’s going to be okay, Soubi.”
Ritsuka sounds like he believes it-like he believes it’s going to be okay for both of them. Soubi wants more than anything to believe him, but he isn’t sure that he can. Things are different now, and they will continue to be different, he is certain. Seimei is back… Seimei has betrayed him - has betrayed them - and now Soubi doesn’t know what to do about it. He still wants to take Ritsuka and leave, just the two of them, but Ritsuka’s already rejected that idea.
Running away has never solved problems, Soubi knows, but if they were to run away, he feels that he’d be able to keep Ritsuka safe. If they were to run away together, nothing could touch them.
Soubi doesn’t know what’s going to happen now, and maybe that’s what frightens him the most-that uncertainty.
He looks up at Ritsuka from his kneeling position, and he sees the worry and the confusion in the boy’s eyes. Worry because Ritsuka’s never seen him like this before, no doubt, and confusion because Ritsuka doesn’t know what’s wrong. Soubi can’t find it in his heart to tell him, either. Part of him wants to, but he’s afraid that if he does, Ritsuka might fall apart, too.
Ritsuka’s shoulders are slumped. He looks tired. He’s carrying so much weight - too much weight - on his shoulders for one so young, and Soubi wants to help him. Soubi wants to help his Sacrifice hold that weight, but he can barely hold his own right now.
Still….
“Your cheek,” he begins, changing the subject and reaching up to brush his fingers against said cheek. There’s a new mark there - a cut, a shallow one - and Soubi feels like scolding himself for not noticing it before now.
Ritsuka flinches and blushes, looking away. “It doesn’t hurt,” he mumbles.
“You’re lying to me, aren’t you?”
Soubi smiles inwardly, though it is a melancholy smile. Ah, who’s lying to whom now, Ritsuka? He doesn’t believe the boy-he knows that shallow wounds tend to hurt more than deep ones, and he also knows that while his Sacrifice might not be in much physical pain, he is certainly experiencing emotional pain.
Soubi can sympathize, and he cannot bear to add to that pain. Not right now. He’d hate himself for it.
“Let me see your hands,” he says gently, and after a brief hesitation, the boy complies. There are marks on his wrists where the ropes have dug in. Soubi brushes his thumbs over the marks, hoping to provide some comfort.
“Soubi,” Ritsuka says, sounding a bit hesitant, “you shouldn’t worry-there are more important--”
Soubi quiets him by pressing his lips to the inner aspect of one wrist and then the other. Soft kisses.
“Soubi,” Ritsuka says again, and he sounds less hesitant and much more insistent now. He kneels as well, shaking his head. He is blushing again. “Soubi, listen. I’m more worried about… about you.”
Ritsuka does something unexpected in that moment, and places one of his hands over Soubi’s heart. Soubi wonders, then, if it’s possible for one’s heart to break twice in one day, and if it’s possible for one’s heart to break for two completely different reasons.
He places his hand over Ritsuka’s and echoes the youth’s earlier words: “It doesn’t hurt.”
Ritsuka’s eyes soften and he slides his arms around Soubi, hugging him fiercely. “You dummy,” he whispers, and the slight catch in his voice is enough to tell Soubi that Ritsuka doesn’t believe his little white lie, either.
~END~
---------------------------
*hides* Was that okay? Was it horrible? ^^ First Loveless fanfic, so, yeah… I’m a bit worried about it. But I think it’s pretty in its own somewhat sad way. Volume 6 of the manga pretty much broke my heart, and I felt terrible for both Soubi and Ritsuka (and more recent volumes are making me kind of scared XD).
Anyway, now that this one’s out of the way, maybe I can get back to work on the damn JRock fanfic I’m supposed to be working on in the first place. -_-;
Feedback is a good thing, people. <3
