I’ve got this friend who’s stuck at home with a back injury, so I brought him some books and movies. He was reading Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban so I gave him Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix, and he likes guns and weapons, so I also gave him the first four Aubrey/Maturin books ( Read more... )

I started Master & Commander in December of 2004 and I still haven't finished it!

I read the HP books no problem though... damn smallfonts! XD

The books get faster as you go. The first one took me weeks because I had to keep looking up ship diagrams and slang and things like that. Once you know a mainstaysail from a topgallant studdingsail, it's easier. Oh, and he uses this really old-fashioned punctuation that really threw me for a while, but I got used to it.

the slang didnt give me trouble, it was(as you said)trying to remember the difference between the ship parts etc. after that it was easy.

I can't remember what specific slag gave me trouble, but I know there were at least two times when I read passages aloud to my roommate and said, "What the heck does this mean?" I think they were probably both things that were explained later. "Wet the epaulette" was probably one of them.
