Day 1 - Sunday
Arrived at the airport and was met by Apples and Ruben. Tobs and Wolfy had stayed behind as they’d all come out the night before and it was very expensive for all of them to come. Got to Khao San Road and Rambuttri Road and booked into the backpackers next door to the one the boys were staying at for the night. Then went to “Full Tank” the service station that turned into a bar at night where the boys proceded to drink more and ended up being quite drunk. Went to bed about 2:30ish.
Day 2 - Monday
Bit of a nothing day. Had a wonder around and looked at a few places, were thinking of going to see the Reclining Budha but the boys were feeling too hungover after the previous night. Hung around the accommodation until 8ish when it was time to catch the sleeper bus down to Koh Tao, ended up being able to spread out on the bus and managed to get a fair amount of sleep.
Day 3 - Tuesday
Arrived at the ferry departure area at about 4.15am. Had to wait until about 6 before the catamaran arrived to take us over to the island. I threw up on the Cat and is was going so quickly through the waves - first ever seasickness which subsided the second I put my feet on land. Got a free taxi down to Buddha View Dive Resort and ended up getting accommodation in the place next door “Tropicana”. Got straight into the water and swam across the bay to some massive boulders where there were giant crabs climbing around. Had a relaxing rest of the afternoon whilst the boys (minus apples) went for a dive. Swam a bit more and checked out the internet café and got some food. The boys came back from their dive to see me as red as a lobster from sunburn. We then went and ate at the beachside bbq and had a drink in the bar. Ended up having a pretty early night as we were all tired from the bus trip down and being in the water all day.
Day 4 - Wednesday
Today Apples and I planned on getting up early to go on a snorkeling tour but didn’t end up waking up until 10:30. SO we went and got some breakfast and then headed to the tour office and hired a motorbike. We got one that was only 4 days old. Apples hadn’t ridden one before and neither had I. He drove and I perched on the back planning to swap over a bit later. We explored the island for a bit then attempted to go over the middle of the island. The road was sand and was pretty soft and our front wheel sunk into the sand and the bike fell over. We got a few scrapes and cuts on ourselves and the bike was quite dirty and a little scratched but we thought it looked ok. At first we thought it wouldn’t start but it was because the stand was down. Once we pushed that up it worked fine. We then went down to the main beach and swam and relaxed there. Afterwards we decided to take the bike back. Unfortunately, they decided that we had damaged it so badly that things needed to be replaced and they charged us 4000 baht (about $120). That sucked and put us in a bit of a bad mood for the rest of the day. Once we got back to our bungalow the boys had finished their dive and were hanging around. They went to get food whilst I chilled out and had a shower. Later we went to the bbq again and then went and sat at the bar for drinks. Some of the boys got quite drunk. I went to bed a bit earlier as my cold had freshened up. At about 12, I was woken by a very drunk Apples coming into the bungalow. I had my phone siting in a little holder on the wall which he knocked over when he went over to see what it was. He then got into bed but quickly got out again and spent the next few hours vomiting and then passing out in the bathroom. I had fallen asleep but had woken up a few hours later and worried that something had happened to him. I had to knock on the door for about 5 minutes before I heard him moving. He then emerged from the bathroom completely naked and went outside to get his towel. All in all an eventful night.
Day 5 - Thursday
Today we got up early to go on the snorkeling trip. 650 baht for a whole day on a boat that takes you around the island to all the different snorkeling spots. Apples felt pretty seedy and towards the end I was feeling quite sick because of my cold. But the snorkeling was amazing. Once we got back we joined the boys for our final bbq dinner and drinks at the bar, where I had my last glance of “hot boy” as I called him. Headed off to bed pretty early.
Day 6 - Friday
This was our last day on the island. Wolfy and Tobs went for a final dive in the morning and Ruben, Apples and I just hung around, ate some food and packed up our stuff. Ruben headed off the island at about 12.30 to catch the ferry and bus back up to Bangkok. The rest of us left the island at 2 and headed to the next island along Ko Phangan. The island was dead though! Its meant to be a party island but there was hardly anyone there. Ended up staying in some pretty basic accommodation, the beds were really hard and there was no hot water and a fan that ran at such high speed we had to turn it off in order to get some sleep. Plus there was no bedding or anything. We spent the evening playing pool at the Outback Bar and watching movies.
Day 7 - Saturday
The next day we had to hang around until 4 before catching the ferry off the island so we wandered around and had a look at some of the shops. The boys brought some books and then we headed back to the Outback Bar for some more pool and watched “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back”. Finally we got a taxi to the ferry and headed back over to the mainland where we caught a bus that took us to the train station. The train left at about 10pm. We got on and got straight into bed as everyone else on the train was already asleep.
Day 8 - Sunday
We got into Bangkok at about 10:30am and caught a taxi back to Rambuttri Road. I was in a really bad mood after getting mad at the boys on the train (not for any good reason). But my mood improved on arriving at our new accommodation the “Four Sons” (where we stayed the following weekend also) and found Ruben and Sarah. We dumped our stuff and then headed off to see the Reclining Buddha. When we got back Sarah and I did a bit of shopping of Khao San Road and then met the boys at the Silk Bar where they were playing pool. We then headed back to the hotel to freshen up and headed to Full Tank via the kebab stand. Sarah and I drank Vodka Red Bull buckets whilst the boys drank Sangsom Buckets (Thai whiskey, coke and red bull). Little point of interest - the red bull in Thailand is flat!! It comes in these little bottles that look like medicine bottles. Anyway we were then joined by Sarah’s room mate and teaching buddy Anna and a few others that had been teaching in Thailand which was fun… although the boys just huddled together at the end of the table in their own conversation about balls moving on trains. The boys then went off to check out a ping pong show and Sarah and I had more drinks before heading back to the accommodation where we met the other guys after their escapades which they said weren’t very good. Headed back to my room via Apples and Wolfy’s room to discover that apple’s hadn’t returned. Then went up to my room which I was sharing with tobs and we went for a wander on the pretence of finding Apples but ended up getting Pad Thai and beer. Couldn’t find Apples so headed off to bed.
Day 9 - Monday
We all felt quite seedy today. Apples had returned but had lost his ATM card. Went for breakfast at Burger King which made most of us feel sick. Wolfy decided to pay an extra 150 baht to keep his room until 4 and he, tobs and apples spent the day in there watching movies. Sarah, Ruben, Anna and I went and had foot massages and then a little browse through the shops. I then joined the other boys in the room and hung out for awhile before they went to get pizza. Sarah, Ruben and Anna then arrived and chilled out for an hour or so before the boys came back and it was time to check out. We went to get pizza and then anna and Sarah headed back to their home and we got a taxi to the train station to catch the train to chiang mai. We played a bit of cards on the train before heading to bed (which wasn’t as comfy as the other train).
Day 10 - Tuesday
We arrived in Chiang Mai at about 7.30 and hopped off the train to be greated by “Mama Honey” who persuaded us to head to her accommodation for breakfast and we ended up booking in for a trek starting at 9am that day. I was feeling kind of sick and really wasn’t keen to do it but then changed my mind. We jumped into a taxi ute and headed off in a group of 12 - all of us Australian or English. We travelled for about 40 minutes before hopping off at a little market where we got some food. We then travelled for another half hour or so to check out a waterfall. Next we stopped for lunch and then finally reached the beginning of our trek which started by viewing the hot springs (110 degrees in some places!!). I found the walking tough. We did about 7km on that day and it was all up hill or down hill. I held the group up a bit as I found my cold was playing up but I made it in the end! We spent the night at a little Hilltribe Village. We stayed in this one big hut with mosquito nets over mattresses on the floor. We had a camp fire and played a guitar and sang songs and drank beers. It got quite cold up there as well. I went to bed at about 12 and the boys played a drinking game in which they ended up with streaks of ash all over their faces which was pretty funny to wake up to the next morning.
Day 11 - Wednesday
We got up early and had breakfast before setting off again. I found the first part of walking difficult as it was straight up hill but the walk only took an hour and we came up at an elephant camp. We jumped on the elephants and headed off through the jungle and river. I have to say it was probably one of the most amazing experiences ever. We rode for about 1 and ½ hours and then jumped onto bamboo rafts for the rest of the river. These were pretty insane. You had to stand and make sure the weight was evenly dispersed up and down the raft. I got lucky and had the bit near the bags so I got to lean on something but the others had to balance. Wolfy managed to fall in and then jumped in a couple of times. We then got to the end of the trek and had lunch at another little village before being picked up by the taxi ute and taking back to Chiang Mai (on a very bumpy road). Back in Chiang Mai we checked in and had showers and got some food. Headed out to use the internet and then Ruben and I went back to the accommodation whilst the boys went to play pool. Chatted with Ruben and checked out photos before heading to bed.
Day 12 - Thursday
Had quite a sleep in today and headed downstairs at about 11.30. Had breakfast and then jumped in a minivan to check out the temple up on the mountain in Chiang Mai. This was pretty awesome. We then checked out the market around the outside of the temple briefly and I hung out with an elephant. Brought a few prints and stuff and then headed down to the handicrafts area where we saw how silk, jewelry and lacquerware are made and were taken into expensive shops. We then headed back to the accommodation to meet Tobs who had hired a bike to go find his Dad. We then caught a taxi to the nightmarket and had dinner with Tobs’ dad and then got into the shopping. This was the best market. There were hardly any crowds it had awesome things and the stall owners were willing to barter a fair bit with you and gave you really good prices. I got a fair loot there and probably could have brought even more if we had stayed a bit longer. Had a second dinner at Burger King before heading home.
Day 13 - Friday
Checked out of the hotel at about 12 and then went for a bit of a wonder. Tobs and Wolfy got hair cuts and then we walked to the post office so I could get a box for some of my purchases. We then got fried chicken and beer and sat near this little park whilst a school band walked along the street. We then headed back to pick up our bags via a little pub with pool and foosball tables and then the boys headed back to Burger King whilst I looked after their stuff back at the hotel. Got picked up by the sleeper bus at 6.30 and began to make our way back down to Bangkok. None of us slept very well this time and I was mad because Wolfy was being a prick again.
Day 14 - Saturday
We arrived in Bangkok at about 6.30 and walked over to our accommodation from the previous week. They said they were full but we managed to get two rooms and Ruben said he’d go down at 12 to get another one for him and Sarah. I fell asleep straight away and dozed til about 10:30. I then went and got some food and headed back up to the room to sleep more. Sarah and Anna arrived at about 12.30 and they and Ruben went for a wonder and to get their legs waxed. I got up about 3 and joined the others at Silk Bar for Pepsi Chang (beer in pepsi cups as it was illegal to serve it because of the election). Sarah, Anna and I went for a wander and ended up at another pub to meet some of Anna’s friends. Ruben and Tobs then joined us and they, Sarah and I headed back to Silk Bar for cocktails. Then went back to the accommodation and I watched The Holiday while the other boys hung out in the other room and then went to sleep.
Day 15 - Sunday
Today we got up early and headed off to Chatachuck Markets via the subway. I brought stacks of stuff and we all got really hot and tired. Caught the subway back then had a few issues with a taxi that didn’t know where he was going so didn’t get back to Khao San Road until 3. Us girls then went and had facials and met the boys and did some more shopping. Tobs and Wolfy went back to the hotel (where Apples was) and after shopping for awhile Anna and I wandered back to give Sarah and Ruben some time alone. Anna and Sarah left about 5.30 and I did a bit of solo shopping before Wolfy and I went and played some pool and got food before heading back to the other guys room where we watched The Ant Bully. Afterwards I did more shopping and then we all went to bed whilst Tobs went to pick up his sister from the airport. I was a bit disappointed we didn’t drink on our last night but the ban on alcohol wasn’t lifted til 12 and by then the others were pretty tired.
Day 16 - Monday
This was our last day. We got up and went and got breakfast before checking out of the accommodation. Went and did a little bit more shopping and Ruben got his eyebrow pierced whilst Wolfy and I got crappy Henna tattoos. It was then time to head to the airport. We had to take two taxis because we had so much stuff. We checked in and got our tickets and then went through “passport control” and got into the terminal. Went and got Burger King again which I paid for due to a “your mum” joke. Had a little look at duty free and then headed to our gate. I had the two bottles of Sangsom that I had brought as presents taken off me which sucked and we got onto the plane. The plane was heaps better than the one coming over as we got individual tvs and movies on demand. I watched a couple of movies and attempted to sleep but wasn’t comfy enough and kept getting woken. Wolfy and I had a fight about his seat which I think was worsened by our exhaustion which continued into the airport the next day.
Day 17 - Tuesday
We landed in Sydney about 6.50am local time and got through Passport control and customs easily. My bags didn’t even get scaned. They just asked me to take out the wood products that I had declared and they were all fine. I paid for a taxi over to the domestic terminal where we were able to check in our stuff and then napped at our gate. Wolfy and I were fighting and I ended up getting pretty upset and teary. The flight to Melbourne and then the one to Sydney went really quickly though so that was good and we arrived in Hobart at about 5:40pm.
Its really good to be home but weird still. I’m absolutely exhausted and missing Thailand and even the boys a little bit. Can’t wait to get my photos organized and see what everyone thinks of their xmas presents.
