ICP
Still Clownin'
If you’re the type of person who has a huge stack of old issues of Real Detroit stored away in your closet (maybe it's just me) you may have realized that our favorite clowns, the Insane Clown Posse, have appeared on our cover a lot. Especially around the time of their annual Hallowicked concert in Detroit that takes place every October. Why is every Real Detroit Weekly paper stand empty when ICP hits the front page? Because that roving band of juggalo jackals got to 'em first.
You can’t not know about ICP. They came up in the Detroit rap scene with the likes of Esham and Kid Rock in the early-'90s, and never paused for a beat. Today they have their own record label, clothing line, energy drink, festival, wrestling federation (!!!), dozens of albums and movies. Most importantly, they have the juggalos, a rabid fan base so dedicated that they would probably put you in the hospital if you talked smack about the clowns. So, you know, it might be a good idea to bust out that clown paint on Saturday, even if you're just going for the bluegrass.
The last couple of months I’ve watched ICP release their totally anticipated feature film, Big Money Rustlas - the prequel to their first feature film Big Money Hustlas from 2000. Fans have waited a decade - a decade! - for this flick. Just when it seemed like hope was gone ... Bang! Pow! Boom! Psychopathic Records was having a world premier at the Fillmore.
“This is the most excited I’ve ever been about anything we’ve done!” Violent J said at the premiere. “We knew one day it would come through. We have our foot in the door now. We’re going to turn Detroit into Hollywood.”
You can only imagine what it's like to film a movie with the Insane Clown Posse. We heard some rumors about cast members almost getting busted for smoking down, but Shaggy2Dope says his favorite memory during filming was "falling off a horse." Is this prequel set in the Civil War? Watch the film, especially Shaggy's face during this scene. Dude looks terrified.
At Real Detroit we’ve watched ICP grow from a local group to an international freak show (in a good way). We’ve enjoyed every second of it, and our 11th Birthday Break just wouldn’t be complete unless ICP was involved. Real Detroit is forever down with the clowns - so haters, fuck the fuck off. | RDW
