Bluegrass time

Step into the light, poor Lazarus
Don’t lie alone behind the window shade
Let me see the mark death made
I dream a highway back to you.

[In August 2005] yours truly ordered some music from Amazon. True, nothing new in that. But get this, one of the CDs was country/bluegrass. Guess how many country CDs my collection used to contain? That’s right, zero. Dugi has a couple but I don’t let him play them when I’m within earshot. (Although Kenny Rogers has a few songs I admit as my guilty pleasures - blaming my mother.) But this is definitely a different breed of music: jazzy, bluesy, nostalgic yet fresh.
What will sustain us through the winter?
Where did last years lessons go?
Walk me out into the rain and snow
I dream a highway back to you.

So what’s up with this? Some time back I was home alone and turned on the tv while I was cleaning up. Or dying my hair. Can’t remember the details. Anyway, this documentary about country music was on and I ended up watching it. There was some Sally Ann (or Mary Louise or whatever those southern chicks are always called), no, Tammy Wynette, who had some great stories about her career, and the ever adorable and slightly scary Dolly Parton. And then there was the angel. Gillian Welch, a young woman wearing simple clothes and no make-up (especially compared to Dolly), singing something that just shot through my heart, with this guy who was doing miracles with his guitar. I scribbled down her name and surfed to Amazon the very next day.

I really, really like Time (the Revelator). This review describes the reasons better than I could. And if bluegrass doesn’t ring any bells, check out this article in Wikipedia.
Oh I dream a highway back to you love
A winding ribbon with a band of gold
A silver vision come and bless my soul
I dream a highway back to you
