When Daniel started k @ our elementary school we went to the "welcome night". there were quite a few parents here who raised havoc because the classrooms has 21 kids that year. They wanted to create an extra classroom to lower the # of kids in each class (they did - actually). They were sooooo outspoken about it, describing this as an unacceptable # of kids and just overall craziness. This is a public school, however it is in a priviliged school district where parents expect almost private school setting from the school system. All of the schools are rated "10" on greatschools site - and they fight for that rating by closely monitoring the school board and being very active. I think they are a pain in the butt, however, we do benefit from their pain causing activities. If the parents were not so active - the schools would downgrade, I think. So I think, not all is bad @ Polina's school - it is just active parents want to implement changes, raise ratings...etc.
well, I think there's bulling at pretty much all schools. kids are prone to it. matter of fact, at the beg. of this school year, I noticed that Daniel was agitated, I asked and asked and finally he did tell that an older kid was bothering him. I immediately contacted his teacher and after-school program. I received immediate feedback and paid closer attention to Daniel asking him in much detail how his day went. From his attitude I could see that it seized. Buuuuuut it does not mean it wont happen again. I think the school's role is not necessary to monitor (as its hard to tell sometimes) but to listen and act when a parent approaches.
I get the sense from the letter that the parents tried to complain but the teachers/administration was unresponsive. I mean, if they had to get the superintendent involved... Either way, since he's involved now, I hope things will turn around for the better. But as my husband put it, we weren't worried before but are worried now...
