Here are two ficlets that follow
becky_writing's wonderful "
Decision," which is the last chapter in her
Redux series. If you haven't read "Decision," definitely read it first!
(Huge thanks as always to Becky for letting me play in her universe!)
Title: Human Weaknesses
Fandom: Doctor Who
Pairing: Jacobi!Master/Jack
Rating: PG
Word Count: 174
Summary: The Master blames Yana.
He blames Yana for a lot of things. The drums are louder than they used to be because Yana didn't know what they were or how to deal with them all that well. He wonders what's at Utopia because Yana wanted to know.
The biggest thing he blames Yana for, though, is Jack. It's the only reason he can think of that he hasn't gotten rid of him yet. It's the Doctor who collects humans, not him; he's grateful to Jack for opening the watch, but that's as far as it goes. And yet…they've been traveling together for a couple of weeks, just…seeing things. Planets with stars and skies that change colors. Civilizations that aren't dying. Obviously, it's just because he's been stuck at the end of the universe for twenty years, and because Yana, stupid human that he was, couldn't resist Jack.
He has no doubt that it'll wear off soon enough. He wishes, though, that he didn't feel as if Yana was laughing at him somewhere in the back of his mind.
Title: Unexplored Territory
Fandom: Doctor Who
Pairing: Jacobi!Master/Jack
Rating: PG (language)
Word Count: 217
Summary: The Master's in an unfamiliar place.
He took the TARDIS off isomorphic control a week ago. He hasn't told Jack yet. He tells himself it's a test, to see if he can trust Jack, or that it's to save his own skin if something goes wrong. Or that Jack could probably sweet-talk the ship into obeying him anyway, if he put his mind to it, or a half-dozen other equally flimsy excuses.
The truth, that he only half-realizes himself, is that it bothers him to think that Jack might get stuck somewhere for millions of years while some barely-formed world develops sentient life. His TARDIS is far newer than the Doctor's old relic, but it's not infallible. He's not infallible either, as much as he hates to admit it.
What happens after he dies has never concerned him. It's not going to affect him, so why should he care? It's…unsettling to think that's changed. All right, it's downright terrifying. This is completely unexplored territory, and he's never been as fond of that as certain other Time Lords he could name. He wants a map, and he doesn't know where to get one. He's a selfish bastard, and he's always going to be a selfish bastard…but the TARDIS is off isomorphic control, and he thinks maybe it's time to talk to Jack.
