How quickly we forget. I just got back from spending the weekend in New Orleans. One year and a few months later and it looks like nothing's changed. Trees are scattered every which way, roads are uprooted and hard to drive across, roofs are caved in, stores shut down, debris and trash everywhere . And most of all, it was and still is an abandoned city.Abandoned by its people, by its government, and nothing substanial is being done about it. How the hell can we go off and fight wars across countries when we can't even help the people in our own country. So many people living in poverty, its unreal. These people deserve better. How can our President order the deployment of +20.000 troops to iraq when his own people are without homes and have lost everything. How can a man with so much power just sit there and let this happen, it disgusts me.
This is the neighborhood we worked in, all of this was underwater.
Who knows how long thats been there, there were no kids playing , no one drove by....
We finally arrived, as you can tell it was a dreary cold wet day =./
Supplies.
This is some of what had already been removed from the house. We had to finish taking out all the garbage and gutting the house. Basically removing the lower walls, carpets, kitchen area, sinks, etc.
Front door of the house.
After we removed the carpet. Living room.
Mold stains due to the water levels.
Kitchen area, roof collapsed. It was raining all day and water would drip in as we were working.
water stains...
everything we took out. We started making a pile in the driveway but later were told that if it wasn't on the side of the street that FEMA wouldn't pick it up.So we had to move the pile.Who knows how long they'll take to come pick it up.
After....the end result.
wet= water that progressively seeped in throughout the day.
It rained all day saturday and the temp. was around the low 40s, it was inevitable that I was going to get sick. So here I am, with a sore throat, congested chest and head. But it was worth it. The woman who owned the house came by to personally thank us and it really meant a lot. She thanked us for not forgetting about her . Even if we worked on one house , its something.
More pictures to come...
