This weekend was good fun. I went home to see the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band's 40th Anniversary gig. Despite the Astoria messing about with their layout (they put lots of seats in and we were left standing in the aisle) it was lovely. As a group of 18-30 somethings we were probably the youngest people there and it certainly made for a different, rather more civilised atmosphere. If nothing else, I had no trouble getting to the bar. The gig was a combination of a straight gig, a pantomine and a sing a long.I was very impressed with how much energy the band had, particularly as most of them are at in their 60's and 70's.
In addition to the the surviving band members, Phil Jupitus, Ade Edmonson and Stephen Fry also appeared. There were really very good, especially Stephen Fry's rendition of "Sport,Sport,Masculine Sport". Obviously it's a shame that Vivian Stanshall couldn't be there, but it was good that there were plenty of pictures of him on the giant OHP screens.
I'm glad to say that I couldn't see any car insurance ads on the tube. They always make me chuckle, if someone is getting the tube then why would they want cheaper car insurance? Particularly in a city as congested as London. It is often quicker to get the tube than to drive.
However, whilst at home I did see an advert for an album called "all time classic tear jerkers". It was described as the perfect gift for valentines day. Quite why is beyond me, as it would either be irrelevent or it serve to remind someone that they were alone on Hallmark's favourite day. I've finally come to the conclusion that it's for women who are sleeping with other women's husbands. Quite a niche market if you ask me, and not one that would warrant heavy advertising exposure on prime time tv.
