DW is based on the LiveJournal code, that's why it looks similar.
What I like about Dreamwidth, among other things:
- no ads (with a paid account you don't see ads on LJ either, but everybody else is bombarded with them, often questionable ones) - the way they have split up the "friends list" in subscriptions and access (if you subscribe to someone's journal that person will not be able to read your friends-locked entries, that happens only when you grant them access) - the high number of women in their development team - their guiding principles
They sound like a very idealistic bunch, much like I imagine LJ was in the early days, before the sell-out to SixApart and later SUP, so let's hope they can keep it up.
All in all, I feel better giving my money to Dreamwidth than to LJ, who have made it a habit to implement questionable or objectionable features without consulting their subscribers first and to generally piss off their users while regarding us more like ways to generate as much money as possible than as customers.
