R.I.P. Challenge books #3 and 4

These two books were rather a disappointment. I don't have much to say about Erken mij by Esther Verhoef. It was given out as a freebie during last year's "month of the thrilling book", held every June, and has not been, and will most likely never be, translated into English ( Read more... )

And since the good outweighs the bad, I am not sorry.
Words of great wisdom from the Supreme Squirrel!

Shame about the two RIP entries though, that neither turned out to be a rewarding reading experience. Disgusting smells and revolting consumables...don't know if I'd have the stomach for that either.

I'll use it as a palate cleanser
I do this too! Sometimes I need a brain scrub from too much of one genre, or too many emotional downer books. Normally, I use a romance novel for this - something light but not dumb, can be chick-lit but not bimbo-lit.

revolting consumables
Believe me, "consumables" is too much of a euphemism here!

Come on, you read Poppy Z. Brite!

I've decided to leave the palate cleanser until after I've finished the Challenge. I thought I needed one after my nauseating experience, but by the time I posted the entry I was feeling much better again. Hungry, even.

chick-lit but not bimbo-lit
Not well versed in that department, do you have examples of both?

Hiya,

Nothing to be ashamed of -- I read David Peace after absolutely loving the Red Riding films esp. ‘74, but after really struggling with the Yiddish/religious stuff in the last one (literally gave me a headache) nearly being in tears over some bits I’m going to pass it on -- you need a degree to read him anyway.

Kathy Lette’s good for chick-lit; sounds like you need some after that.

I had never heard of Kathy Lette. I may give her a try, thanks.

Hiya,

Luckily I know someone who loves RR as much as (if not more than) I do so I’ll have no trouble finding someone to pass it on to. I do feel a bit of an idiot now because I kept going on about how great DP was (as I tend to when I discover something new)
The films were nothing I hadn’t seen before, so you’d think I’d have been OK with the books --- I think it was the description of the cop who had half his face shot off that got to me the most.

It’s time to worry if/when you stop being affected by these things, I think.
