Anyone remember the
post I did about Glenn Beck going to WIPO trying to get the glennbeckrapedandmurderedayounggirlin1990.com domain name shut down? You know, the one with the
absolutely brilliantly snarky legal submission? Well, the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organisation for those who don't know) Arbitration Panel has
heard it and
made a decision, and surprise surprise, they ruled that the guy who created the domain name can keep it.
(For those who actually like reading such things, the text of the decision can be found
here; it's not actually up on the WIPO site yet.)
The guy who created the domain, however, has graciously decided to give up the domain to Glenn Beck anyway. But not without sending
Glenn Beck an open letter about it. To quote:
It bears observing that by bringing the WIPO complaint, you took what was merely one small critique meme, in a sea of internet memes, and turned it into a super-meme. Then, in pressing forward (by not withdrawing the complaint and instead filing additional briefs), you turned the super-meme into an object lesson in First Amendment principles.
/goes off to read the WIPO decision, is a sad, sad internet law geek.
