sometimes it pays to be a geek

OK, one of the things I have got into lately is "cybernights"... online competitions run through messageboards for stamping or scrapbooking groups or shops. Last weekend there were two, one being themed. Their cybernight from a month earlier was pirate themed (the shop is kinda pirate themed, and the shop owner is a big POTC fan). The papercrafting challenges were themed (eg do a scrapbooking layout of something you treasure), the trivia was themed, and we had some fun challenges: treasure hunt (in your own home) and costume. For costume I just used some stuff that I had previously put together for Puss In Boots, with different boots (purchased for an Eowyn costume), a dupioni sash (purchased to be one layer of Rosie Cotton's wedding dress), metal ruler for sword and no ears or tail. Didn't win that, but it was fun.

However, the theme for the night just past? Fantasy. Oh goodie! She had asked for suggestions, I had suggested it along with a bunch of other more generic things, thinking fantasy probably wasn't going to be all that easy to do... but she picked it and the papercrafting challenges were good (ie toothfairy is sick, make her a get well card, do a scrapping layout of your holiday fantasy, and there was a sketch challenge), and the fun challenges: costume (woohoo!) and "Find your fantasy fings"... which entailed collecting everything in your house pertaining to fantasy, Disney, cartoons etc etc (though scifi was ruled out... which has me thinking), and make the tallest free-standing pile possible. I left this till the last hour to do, thinking over all the things I could put in it and the best way to arrange them to get lots of height. Decided books stacked up was the way to go, with everything else arranged around.

So I got the girls to clear out their bookshelves, I pulled out the relevant things from the bookcase in the loungeroom, started stacking them up... it was getting quite high... go off to get something else and TIMBER!!! Over they go... so did it again in a better order, but it got just higher than I am tall and started wobbling dangerously so I put the few DVD's (LOTR) that I had pulled out around the bottom, quickly took the photo and put the books away... then arranged the girls toys that they had got together and put them on Shaelea's bed (as she has Flower Fairies doona cover)... and they were just the more strictly fantasy toys, Disney etc etc would have made a huge mess! So even though the first photo was the best for the competition I put both in... and I am sure there are a few people concerned about me now, LOL

What did I do for the costume? Hobbit of course! I did check whether I could use a costume that was already made, and it was ok'ed so... got dressed, even glued the hair to my feet (luckily the last time I did them I had curled extra hair), got the girls dressed in their dragon and fairy costumes, took photo.

I won both of these comps! :-D So now I have $30 to spend at this online store :-D :-D :-D I also have $10 to spend at another store from a prize at another cybernight the weekend before :-D

And these themed nights... I am suspecting the next one might be scifi... don't have a scifi costume and don't think I have anything I could just throw together and say was scifi... but I am eyeing off bun-haired Princess Leia... it would only be appropriate with my hair, and it was the first character I roleplayed in the schoolyard LOL.
