Today's skewed view on losing weight.

Why is it that it feels like women can no longer say "I want to get back into shape" or "I want to lose some weight" without there being some sort of negative implications attached to it. Anytime a girl expresses the desire to lose those few inches she gained over the winter everyone immediately says, "But you look fine." as if they're assuming she wants that model body and therefore thinks she is fat as a cow and needs reassurances of her being otherwise.

I rarely talk about wanting to get back into shape because thanks to anorexia and society's fixation on the rail thin model body people insist that I don't need to and that I look great the way I am.

Is it not possible that us girls just want to return to the way we looked last year rather than aiming for the impossibly perfect body? Or maybe what we mean by saying "I want to get back into shape" we mean we just want to prevent growing anymore than what we have since last winter.

It also seems that everyone forgets how deceiving clothes can be. They hide the excess fat so when you say a person looks fine you most likely don't have a clue as to what you're talking about because no one is ever talking about how they look with their clothes on.

For instance with myself. According to medical calculations I'm twenty pounds overweight. The designated weight they've given women my height is not unhealthy and it still allows a little extra cushion. Its not even the weight I'm concerned about anyways. Weight is very deceiving as well. Its the inches that I pay attention to and compared to where I was 2 winters ago, I've gained more than I would like to keep.

So I guess my point is is that there is a difference between wanting your body to be healthy and wanting something entirely different. And before you reprimand or correct someone's desire for wanting to hit the gym think twice because your insistant compliments help people stay on that track of indifference which can quickly lead to an extra ten inches rather than a simple three.
