I just turned in my take home final (and have no more academic duties!), had lunch (and still have money on my dba!) and mailed all my xmas cards (yes, it's a bit early, but be merry!). The scene in my room is very peaceful-everything is packed, neat and organized. I am essentially ready to go. I also don't have much to do, so I am going to put down my thoughts on Dartmouth, this first term and college in general. I warn you-this MIGHT be a long and mushy entry.
I ended up here by chance. I applied here b/c I decided to throw out my Harvard app and needed one more place to apply. Veronica applied here early and basically annoyed the hell out of me to apply. It was the common app and it was easy, so I did and I thought I'd NEVER get in. Besides my whole I suck complex, I was late to my Dartmouth interview and I think I gave really dorky answers. The thought of even coming here had not even crossed my mind. I was pretty ready to make my decision b/w Cornell, UPenn and Duke when I came back from a visit to Duke. I remember coming back from a visit to Duke and going straight to the shower (I always feel really dirty after getting on airplanes for some reason) and I got this call from Dartmouth, which I answered in the shower b/c my mom wasn't home. The guy was like you NEED to come here blahblahblah, to which I responded "but it's really cold there". Then he said "did I mention you can come up here next weekend?". One thing that must be understood-I was all about free trips to schools my senior year so I decided to visit even if I didn't really care much about Dartmouth. It was spring and everyone was so in love with it and people were so happy here and it was picture perfect and people were playing frisbee on the green and the dorms were so nice and...and....and!!! Even the way they call “prefrosh” is different here and way cuter (they are called prospies)! So that is how I ended up here and I'm so happy!
So my first term is over and, contrary to what I thought at the beginning, I have been able to survive (and do relatively well…by that I mean not FAIL anything). I’ve found out a lot about myself and I’ve learned a lot from other people (I really think everyone is really smart and talented here!). The people on my floor are awesome!!!! So are my trippees! Orientation was awesome and so was Homecoming. Sometimes I feel that everything here is designed to make my day. (maybe that’s only me though) I love everyone here!! Even the people who sit in the front row in Chem, even my TA (who btw gave me a really good grade regardless of the amount of crap I talked about her!), and even the ladies at the Hop (specifically Rose who shares my passion for their chocolate chip cookies!). I love walking across the green at night because it’s so quiet and peaceful and it helps me think. I love blitz. I love that people here start partying on Wednesday nights. I love that people on my floor come and drag me out of bed to make sure I’m studying or to make sure I’m on time for tests or lab (yes, I have trouble waking up sometimes). I love the alums-this one from Miami took me out to lunch (it was cute). My Dartmouth interviewer is teaching here this term and also invited me to eat and every time I see her, she asks how I’m doing, etc. (I think that is also really nice!). The Florida admissions officer took me winter clothes shopping (isn’t that super nice???). Dartmouth is so small that you always see familiar faces, it’s impossible to feel lonely, Hanover people always smile at you and PEOPLE STOP WHEN YOU CROSS THE STREET!!! Oh yea, I also love all my classes, even chemistry was somewhat entertaining and engaging. I really liked my govt and English classes. Despite the harsh grading (my English papers come back full of red ink and on the last one my prof pretty much said I wrote bs….i got an A for the class though :]) Aaaa….enough bragging, I LOVE DARTMOUTH! =) =)
I’m going to try to be objective and think of bad things. Um……..it’s cold. WINTER BOOTS ARE REALLY UGLY! So are winter clothes in general and it’s a lot of work to put so many clothes on and then take them off when you get to a place and then put them back on when you’re leaving and then….(you get me). I am also very white (:[) and regardless of how much lotion I put on, my hands look like frozen chicken. The parties are also not ALL THAT. They’re different from Miami parties where people dance and flirt a lot. People here kind of just gather around a pong table and get drunk but aren’t very sexual or dance.
That’s about it. I’ve spent a grand total of 50 min writing this (I’ve also been talking to people online). I’m sure there’s more stuff but it’s enough for now. I’m happy I’m leaving to some warmth. I’ve already made plans with Abram to go to the beach the day after I get to Miami!!! I’m not sure this is very coherent and I’m too lazy to reread it. I’m so excited!!!! :] I am also dancing (I'm such a dork!) ho to a hotel hozone layer (k, so I think it's funny!!)
