Early Life
• James Charles Stuart was born on June 19, 1566 at Edinburg Castle in Scotland.
• His father, Lord Darnley, was murdered in early 1567.
• His mother, Mary Queen of Scots, took over the throne.
• Mary didn’t rule long before James was crowned King James VI of Scotland at the age of 13 months.
• His mother was imprisoned in England by her cousin Queen Elizabeth, and executed for her part in the conspiracy to assassinate Queen Elizabeth.
• King James was taught not by his mother nor father, but by tutors.
• His best tutor was Mr. George Buchanan.
• Buchanan was responsible for making James the more learned and intellectually curious man to ever sit on the throne.
• James was educated in the languages of Greek, Latin, French, English and Scots, and could speak each fluently.
King James Begins to Reign
• James began to rule when he was 19 years of age.
• He married Anne of Denmark a few years later.
• James wrote beautiful love poetry about Anne
• Together they had 9 children.
• James I believed in the Divine Right of Kings (God chose him to rule)
• He wrote a book called Basilicon Doron which means “The Kingly Gift” for his eldest son as instructions for the young prince just incase he didn’t survive.
• James had survived many assassination attempts.
• James ordered only seven copies be made, but word got out and copies were being made and altered.
• James then published the book and it became a best seller for over 50 years
Uniting Scotland and England
• King James became King of the English throne when Queen Elizabeth died, making him King James VI of Scotland and I of England.
• There was peace during his reign, both with his subjects and foreign powers.
• The Kings Enemies
• One of the Kings detractors, Sir Anthony Weldon, was knighted, but soon after was dismissed after the King found racist writings about James’ country Scotland
• Some thought James was a homosexual, but didn’t bring it up until 25 years after his death when he didn’t have a chance to defend himself.
• The Catholic Religion was also against James. A Roman Catholic, Guy Fawkes tried to assassin James and was finally caught and executed.
• This failed attempt is celebrated on November 5 in England each year and is known as Guy Fawkes Night.
Success
• As a lover of the theatre, King James became patron to the troop of one of his most famous subjects, William Shakespeare, the playwright.
• James and William shared a special relationship, because they both loved literature
• Shakespeare’s famous play “Macbeth” was written for James.
• King James was in reign when the first American colonies were established.
• King James also rewrote the Bible.
• The Authorized King James Version of the Bible was created to overshadow all the counterfeit versions of the Bible that were being thrown around at the time.
• James hired all of the best and most intelligent men of the time to help him translate the Bible into one more could understand.
• This book is the best selling in the world.
• Some Christians believe it to be the absolute and final word of God.
Physical
• James was a very sickly man most of his life.
• He had a handicap in his legs and a tongue that was too big for his mouth.
• He suffered from crippling arthritis, abdominal colic, gout, inability to sleep, weak/spastic limbs, nausea, frequent diarrhea, and kidney pain
• He died on March 27, 1625 at Theobolds Park in Herts, England
• He passed Royal power on to an adult son which was quite unusual.
