Love is a relationship. It's the deepest kind of friendship and a connection to a person that is unlike anything else. It's putting the other person before yourself. It's doing anything to please or help that person, whether it's something little and sweet or huge and life-changing. Love is never boring or hurtful and always brings joy and comfort, peace and wisdom, confidence and companionship, certainty and support. "There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear..."(1)
Love looks different on everyone. There's the love you feel for somebody you want to spend the rest of your life with. There's the love you have for your family. There's the love you have for your friends. And most importantly, the selfless and neverending love of God. But it's always a relationship, always a friendship, always a connection that is different for every type of love.
And no, I haven't always felt this way. Before I discovered the love my Lord Jesus Christ has for me, I didn't know love. The love I imagined and the love that I observed around me was beautiful on the outside, but it could be fleeting and selfish. I wanted love because I wanted the highs and the benefits of someone loving me. But without the real meaning of love... the relationship, the friendship, the connection, the selflessness... there is no satisfaction, and the high would ultimately spiral down into a low.
I haven't always known love, but I do know this now: "We love because He first loved us."(2)
