Word Cup: Quarter Finals

Jul 08, 2014 21:44

So... the final four are a lot more predictable than what came before...
Interestingly it's two of last time semi finalists as well as the two teams they (last time)eliminated to get to that point.. although this time not facing each other.. but a rematch is possible as well as a clash of rivals, which is what I'm hoping for, but Europe for the final!!

France-Germany
Well.. I actually thought Germany played better this time. It wasn't spectacularly amazing or beautiful, but the defence seemed to work (well, Lahm was finally playing as a defender) and while Neuer had less to do this time, he did save Germany's arse again at a crucial moment. Hummels is now Germany's second best goal scorer. Who knew?
Löw is probably going to make some dumb decisions and despite Brazil's missing Neymar and Thiago Silva, will probably screw up (again..) It's such a pity. This team could easily be the best. I mean... they ARE on at least on paper, but yeah...

Brazil-Colombia
I changed my mind and went for Brazil in the end, because... They've had so much pressure to do well and apparently people had been complaining about them and praising Colombia and.. well, I got tired of that. Anyway, Brazil looked probably the best they have in this tournament. It's such a pity about Neymar.. :( It seemed like Colombia weren't playing that nicely either, so...
James Rodriguez can still be the top goal scorer and judging by the way the games are going now, he probably will be.

Argentina-Belgium
I was so sure that Argentina was going to win this that I hardly bothered watching... Well, it seemed pretty boring.

The Netherlands-Costa Rica
I don't think I have been this gleeful about a win. Costa Rica were playing for penalties, they got them... and lost. Other than that, they had like one shot on goal during extra time. However, I don't begrudge them for playing defensively (and I consider any whining of "antifootball" ridiculous.. Smaller teams and underdogs are not obligated to let the favourites win), but since I was rooting for the Netherlands, I would have been REALLY mad, if the team that had like one chance during two hours knocked out a team with so many chances.. (somehow managing to hit the goalpost the crossbar or the goalkeeper...)
Costa Rica have never made it this far, and heck they almost made it to the semi finals, so kudos to them.
Robben continues to be amazing. :) Running and trying till the end. :) My Dad was commentating and laughing whenever Robben fell (I suggested a drinking game, but that would actually just kill everyone) But really, despite some exaggerating, the Costa Rica players were all over him! It makes sense.. Despite his predictability, he is really difficult to stop.
Van Gaal's goalkeeper substitution was... actually something that gave me hope. I was feeling like the Netherlands would be done, but then realised that van Gaal wasn't. Well played.

Mm.. anyway, I think the Netherlands have a better chance against Argentina than Germany against Brazil.. But most importantly, I DO NOT want Argentina in the final. I want them.. gone. Yeah, that's even more important than Germany making it to the final. Yes, I just wrote that.

EDIT: Shows what I know.. WTF just happened?? I expected Brazil to win and not lose by SIX goals!! And it could easily have been more if Germany had cared until the end.. But of course Brazil was also quite deflated already at 5-0...
