So I just talked to a friend who went to the bahamas over break and it kind of made me happy that I didn't go. While I wouldnt mind being drunk for eight days in the warm tropical sun, it just seems that there are better things to do. I basically got the impression that it was a fuck fest, and while I am quite liberal, it just seems kind of ridiculous to me that people use "spring break" as an excuse to sleep with tons of people. I never really bought into the "free love" bullshit, grant it, I beleive in loving whomever you want to love, but fucking just for fucking can get old very quickly. I guess I am nothing but a sappy romantic at heart, but I would like to beleive that love does exist, and this, spring break, is a bit questionable. I think spring break illustrates Beckerman's point in Generation S.L.U.T quite well. Who are these kids that we are raising, what the fuck happened to people that care or listen to good music, why arent we seeing any protests against the Iraqi invasion...it's like no one cares about the "world," all they care about is Their world. It is really a shame, and I hope that one day people will realize that a "global community" does exist, but in order for it to flourish it needs to be fostered. Who gives a fuck, though, right?
