I forgot to post yesterday that the guy standing next to me on the train to Pompeii got pickpocketed. Pompeii is obviously a very popular tourist destination and there was a crush of people waiting on the platform. When the train arrived, everyone made a flying leap onboard for space (even the nuns). I heard the loudspeaker announcing "attention! Attention!" followed by some other word I didn't recognize and then, right before the train doors closed, three or four people ran off the train very quickly. I thought it was strange but didn't know what it meant at the time.
They were pickpockets.
Before we even got to the next stop the guy standing next to me began frantically patting down his pockets and asking his wife in an increasingly panicked down if she had his wallet. I don't know how many times he searched his pockets in vain disbelief but finally he had to confront the noxious truth--someone had taken his wallet.
The nun standing next to me began speaking in Italian (there are lots of nuns and friars and priests and the like here, by the way), and though I didn't understand everything she said, I did gather that the warning for attention just before the train doors closed wasn't to keep people from jumping on at the last minute but to remind them to be wary of pickpockets.
I felt sorry for the couple. He lost his id, his credit cards, and who knows what else. an Asian couple checked their moneybelt; I checked to make sure the latch on my purse was locked. It's a terrible thing to be stolen fr while on vacation, but I couldn't help but think...who told you it was a good idea to put your wallet in the pocket of your cargo pants anyway?
