I'm obsessed. Film at eleven.

I'm going to keep talking about City Hunter, because I can't not, if you know what I mean (and I think those of you watching do).

I had to watch the first few minutes of episode 12 just now because the episode 11 cliffhanger was killing me. )

kdrama: city hunter, kdramas, gvp (gratuitous video post)

It's not just this show, it's ALL dramas. It's really quite annoying too, because it's so obviously not what someone would say in that situation, and yet people just don't take the time to put it into context.

I SHOULD BE THE SUBBER FOR THIS SHOW
You really should! Hell, I sometimes even want to take a crack at fixing up the subs myself because it bugs me so much, especially with City Hunter since I rewatch the episodes, like, A LOT.

It's a pretty hard sentence to translate
It does seem like that. I think one problem is the differences in society. In English, I'd immediately feel that it's demeaning if a man calls a grown woman a child. So phrasing it as "that child deserves better" also sounds condescending. "That girl deserves better" wouldn't be as demeaning, but it might also not get the message across as well unless the viewer knows at least some Korean. In the end, though, I feel like it's better to lose some of the nuance of him calling her a child in favor of getting across the fact that he's not being an asshole ex-husband who thinks she's now ruined because he is no longer with her (which was pretty much my read of the pitiable line).

Maybe it's like you hit that high for a few eps in your run and then there's no place left to go but down. PROVE ME WRONG, CITY HUNTER.
I second that! And so far, so good, right?

Just watched that vid and AMAAAAAAZING.
RIGHT? I played it over and over again at work yesterday because I just could not get over how perfect it was. And then I probably watched it ten more times while writing this post. It's become a compulsion! Must. Hit. Replay...

Ha, I was going to leave a disclaimer about the "child" thing not being as demeaning as it sounds - it's more an age thing than anything. Older women can call younger men "child" too, although in that instance the connotation would probably shift slightly because of the switch in gender (to something more maternal, more "I need to take care of/nurture him" compared to "I need to protect her").

I agree that you're just going to have to sacrifice some of the subtler meanings of that phrase for something that makes sense/doesn't make him seem like a jerk. I'm sure you come across situations like that all the time.

Haha, really? Is that how that line comes off? I don't know, maybe it's because I have such a soft spot for Young-ju (Deserved or undeserved? LET'S NOT TALK ABOUT THE DADDY LONG LEGS THING BECAUSE THAT'S JUST WEIRD.) or because I've been watching the show without subs, but I would never characterize him as someone who would think that. That is a pretty jarring line if you think about it that way.
