This VM fic makes me so happy. It feels like the author is making sense out of all the things I never thought made sense in season 3. Dealt with in this chapter: Duncan, Piz, the FBI. But if you're allergic to WIPs, I'd recommend staying far away from this one. I think it's been over a year since the last update and we're only on chapter four. So,

You've definitely articulated my thoughts on Dexter. (Although I will happily admit I was a big Deb/Lundy shipper and did enjoy that particular storyline) Deb has always been one of my favourite characters, but she took my breath away (Literally) in the latest episode. I watched it with my dad and we were both blow away by how brilliant her performance was. I actually felt like I was hyperventilating.
As for Rita, I couldn't agree more. There have been a lot of complaints in the fandom about her character in the last couple of seasons. I personally think it was all downhill after Dexter cheated on Rita with Lila. Ever since then Rita has adopted this wounded, holier-than-thou attitude where she feels Dexter owes her something. She's nagging, controlling, and overall just a boring character. I found her character interesting in Season 1 because she was so broken and as you mentioned, her character added nicely to Dexter's already fucked up life but now is a whole 'nother story. Aside from the obvious complaints about her, she has just become so bland. They were even given the opportunity to make her more interesting when she witnessed Dexter's breaking of the streetlights in 4x03 "Blinded By The Light" but instead wasted that opportunity by having her buy into the idea that it was merely 'stress related'. Beside the basic fact she's become obnoxious and annoying, I really don't see the point of her character anymore. We're supposed to be buying into the progression of Dexter's character with his personal revelation in the last episode that he actually loves Rita and the children instead of simply using them as part of his cover, but the less likable Rita becomes, the less I'm able to believe anyone could truly love her. She's now weakening other character's storylines and progression at this point.
Honestly though, I'm just thankful this season is an improvement on last season. I hated the whole Miguel Prado storyline (It doesn't help that I don't think Jimmy Smits is a particularly gifted actor) so generally this season is like a breathe of fresh air. I guess is that means putting up with Rita's whining, it's a small price to pay for a general improvement.

I think that Dexter and Lila was really interesting...for about an episode and a half, until she went bonkers. Because Rita had already become this insanely boring person who for some reason showed no signs of the trauma that so paralyzed her in season 1. Also, the whole addict thing was so stupid that I could barely stand watching it. I know they must worry about blowing their wad too early, but dammit, they need to shake things up. I think the best thing for the show might actually be having Rita finding out about Dex and then having Trinity kill her. Just imagine how much that would fuck Dexter up now that he's realized that he actually wants this life that he's been trying to escape. (Now that I think about it, this might actually be the game plan? Because that realization is sort of blah unless something comes along that fucks it up.)
After last season's premiere episode I couldn't be bothered to keep going, so I marathoned season 3 this spring. And seen over the course of a week it worked pretty well! But yeah, this season is head and shoulders above last season.
