I think I screwed myself but good with that song rewrite, because it's still stuck in my head. Going on five days now! And it's not even the original Brady Bunch song, it's my version. (I honestly can't work out if that makes it better or worse.)
Summers are supposed to be the season of little-to-no TV, but these past two weeks have been insane. What I've been able to watch since I last posted:
Californication
I don't know, it felt kinda...pointless. More like a "look at we can do, we're on cable" than something that is interesting in its own right. It's sorta like Entourage but without Ari. And really, without Ari, Entourage is pretty useless.
I might watch a few more episodes before final judgment, but right now I can't see it lasting. Duchovny may be likable as Mulder, but I can't say the same for this role. Pretty much the only character I liked was the wife of his friend (you know, the one who played Lorna Luft's kid sister in Grease 2).
Chuck
Now that I loved! Possibly the best pilot so far. Or, rather, the one with the most potential to become awesome.
Loved the lead, thought he worked well as both a nerd and as someone who could take charge when the slackerness wears off. I really enjoyed Sarah (Sara?) and I'm liking the ambiguity of "is she or isn't she?" (evil, that is). I'm figuring the creative team isn't really even sure at this point. Can't wait to see this one get off the ground. I mean, if it does. I sure think it deserves to.
Adam Baldwin! (That deserved a paragraph all on its own.)
Mad Men
Hmmm, I'm not sure. I mean, I like the idea and would have loved the look if they'd pushed it just a teeeeensy bit further. But the storylines? Eh. It actually has the same kind of problem that I had with Californication - I don't like any of these people. But I might grow to like them, so this one also gets a few more episodes.
Pushing Daisies
Quirky, funny, Lee Pace. What's not to love? Aaron was my favorite male character on Wonderfalls, so I'd probably have loved Ned no matter what, but the fact that he is a completely loveable character in his own right makes everything so much better.
Love, love, LOVE the look of the show (I already
capped it and
made icons. And check out
winter_baby's
capspam of the pilot [it's spoilery, but personally, I'm not too fussed about spoilers when it comes to pilots].
The one misgiving I have is the Ned/Chuck relationship. For me, the best tack they could take would be if they just ignored the whole "no touching!" (ah, Arrested Development nostalgia...) thing and made it a full-blown romantic storyline anyway, hardly mentioning the fact that they can't touch. The show is just quirky enough to be able to pull it off, I think, and it would be miles better than the pining that this would (and has!) generate(d) in other shows. Or they could just move directly into "just friends" territory. That would work too. Might even get me to 'ship them.
Weeds 3x01-3x02
I was on the fence about this show for much of season 2, but now I just have to keep watching to see Celia get her comeuppance. And no, Doug crying for his wife after they fuck in her crappy motel room that she had to rent because she lost her home and family isn't nearly enough. It's not even that she destroyed the drugs (I'm not a fan of Nancy's dealing. To put it mildly), it's her holier-than-thou attitude that just drives me up the wall.
Conrad's complete indifference to Nancy, leaving her with U-Turn without a backwards glance kinda hurt my soul just a little. Or a lot. Oh Conrad.
