In theory I like the premise. In execution? Meh, not so much.
I like the idea of the heroine of the piece being rather hardboiled, yet inexperienced in this new field, but it feels like there's something missing. The actress has the hardboiled down and if she'd only stuck to that she would have been fine. But anytime they tried to make her softer they failed. This might be something that could build over time, but it should definitely not have been in the pilot.
David Boreanaz is...the same. Hello, Angel, long time no see. It was utterly bizarre having "Angel" reference Mulder and Scully, though. Took me out of the moment because I had to first remember that he wasn't Angel, then remember that he wasn't David and thirdly try to remember his name on this show. Booth, was it?
By the way, in that final scene, how ugly is that tie DB wears? It stops halfway to his belt! Looks like he borrowed his son's tie or something.
The shooting range scene annoyed. First of all because they tried to show chemistry where there was none, and second of all because DB first shooting and being bad (as a once-professional-sniper) and then, in an apparent attempt to show how good he really is, planting two bullets in the target's...ear, was it?
The music choices are weird and some of them are downright tactless. Like having Howie Day's Collide playing when the main character is assembling a skull? What the fuck?! And there were some other rather questionable choices too. Like the cheesy montage music towards the end.
As far as the mystery itself? Entirely predictable, except for the fact that they offered no actual explanation. There was no "gotcha" moment, which ruined a lot of the appeal for me. If it's gonna be a mystery, then at least make it a worthy mystery, not one that becomes unimportant. The reveal should mean something. In this case I don't even think we were told the motive. Or maybe I blinked and missed it.
There were also too many smart people drawing too many stupid conclusions. And when someone makes a completely out of the blue connection 37 minutes into the show you know it's gonna be right, even though it doesn't have a more solid foundation than the red herrings they'd been chasing so far.
So, will I watch again? I don't really know. I'm not a great believer in judging a show by its Pilot. It's not until the show gets a few episodes in that you see if the things that annoyed you in the pilot are going to become permanent fixtures. And like I said, I like the premise in theory. But there were a lot of things that I know will annoy the crap out of me if it continues.
This review reminds me a lot of the Lost review I posted around this time last year. And we all know how that ended. ;-)
