Twisting in the wind

The murderer reveal
It's been almost a week and I feel like I'm still left hanging, waiting for that final twist. It may be the mystery reader in me (and most likely is - I know very little about noir and how the mysteries work themselves out), but I expected there to be one more twist that made all the season's clues come together.

I do think there were clues that led one to suspect Aaron (about a month ago we all thought he did it, after all), but there were too many red herrings that went nowhere. Especially the Kane red herrings, starting from the pilot and continuing right through to the finale.

The thing that I regret most about Aaron being the killer is Harry Hamlin not coming back and being creeptastic next season.

The final red herring
I'm not one of those people who think that Veronica was a major league bitch for deceiving poor Logan. If he had turned out to be the killer (not that I believed that for a second) she was absolutely right in most of her actions. There are a few WTF?! instances when I wonder about what the hell she's thinking, though:

  • Logan's fake alibi - this "WTF?!" I lay more squarely on Keith's shoulders, actually. He and Veronica have known for months that the Kanes not only didn't have alibis, they know that they staged the scene to make it look like the murder had occured earlier. So how come Logan's alibi falling apart suddenly makes all those facts just vanish from their minds? Why didn't they turn in everyone instead of just Logan? Also, I would think that Logan returned to Mexico after having left the note in Lilly's car. Why didn't anyone ask the border patrol if he'd crossed the border again? Because Logan may have asked Dick and Beaver to lie for him when he thought he might be implicated in Lilly's murder, but the correct time of death may actually have exonorated him.
  • The locker scene - since Logan seems intent on ignoring her, why doesn't she just leave? It seems unnecessarily cruel to act out that scene when she gained nothing from it, especially as it seems like she's not even trying to pry information from him.
  • The phone call - at this point she's got to realize that the jig is all but up, so why doesn't she tell him what she's done instead of lying and saying that she'll help him? This one I can sort of understand as she's most likely very surprised by the call in the first place.
  • "I don't think you killed Lilly, I think Logan did." - it just doesn't fit when in the previous scene the VMVO basically says that she's going there to find the letter that he says exonorates him.

I think my main reasons for excusing Veronica for jumping to conclusions about Logan are the scenes with her father. He obviously thinks Logan did it, so she just follows his lead on this one.

Other things that make me go "huh?":
  • Seriously, people, what happened to Aaron's alibi? And why didn't it even enter Veronica's mind as she, yet again, jumped to another conclusion not fully supported by the facts that Aaron was the killer?
  • What was that thing about Logan's shoes in the teaser? Why even put that in when they didn't even address it later?

Elsewhere: I still think that Logan's letter was in the spypen and that Veronica may very well have thought it exonorated Logan, but Weevil most definitely didn't. In fact, I think that the letter made him suspect Logan of being the killer. His comment about how Logan laid his hands on Lilly in ATttD just doesn't make sense otherwise. I don't think Weevil is there to save him, I think he's going to give him a sound thrashing. And at that point I think Logan will welcome it.

Despite my obvious issues with the episode I really didn't dislike it at all. I think it's because my main focus is the characters and there are so many fascinating developments in this episode, especially for Logan.
