how do i know summer's here?

the smell of flo's and seaweed everyday.

neighbors up 'til 5 every night having fires.

movie nights.

flip flops.

opressive heat/refusing to put in an A/C.

Grill.

Seagulls.

I love New England.

So. In anthropology this past year, we talked about human instincts, or rather, the lack thereof. Every scenario the class thought of that could be described as instinctual behavior was knocked down to either a drive or a reflex. For example, if someone throws a rock at your head, you a) move or b) put up your hand/arm to deflect the blow. This is a reflex. Any half-wit would react to the situation, instincts or not. Some people think that wanting sex is a survival instinct, continue the species, blah blah blah, but it's a drive. Much like hunger or thirst.

Well. I was at the beach today and there was a bug crawling on my hand. (it came out of the seaweed i threw at kayla) I immediately shook the bug off my hand without a thought. THEN, i started wondering. would THAT be an instinct? I mean, human arachniphobia could be considered an instinct because it is inborn. Some people have an irrational fear of spiders. It is irrational because they don't have any particular experience that created their fear, it's just there. That being said, I think that a human's reaction to shake off something crawling on them is an instinct. Screw modern anthropology, humans have instincts. The end.
