This article you're quoting is from 2002: http://www.ispreview.co.uk/ispnews/archives2002/arc27.shtml which means it's well and truly out of date. BT don't use SpamCop any more; I've been working with another BT customer to try and get email through spam filters on a talk21.com address.
BT use a Bayesian filter system these days. The first thing to do is to log into webmail and check if it's in the webmail spam folder; if it's in spam, you'll need to open it while it is still in the bulk folder and flag it as *not spam* as a first step. You may also need to reset your spam filters; if they are this broken, then they need to be reset or the problem will continue to get worse for you. Because the Bayesian system learns from the things it does, learning from uncorrected mistakes starts a downhill spiral.
I dislike Bayesian filters on principle; there are better algorithms to use to create intelligent spam filters (for that standard given value of 'intelligent') but that's a whole new geek-rant. You may be better off setting up an automatic filter to bounce email from known legit senders out of the bulk folder and into your inbox where it should get downloaded by your email program.
thanks for the advice Beki... have looked in bulk folder on webmail, which is where spam goes I think, and there is nothing in it.... should i reset the spam filters anyway?
OK, reset the spam filters (if you can - BT don't make that easy) and contact support, by email or through the website, to tell them this
"legitimate email is not getting through to my email account and is not appearing in my bulk email folder on webmail. I am aware that you have hidden filtering in place filtering email before it reaches my inbox and these filters are catching this legitimate email. Please sort this problem out."
This is a huge problem all over the internet - it's one of the biggest reasons for LJ comments going missing. My only other advice would be to switch away from BT email to use gmail - I've only had to tell them to sort their hidden filters out once since I got my gmail account.
