COME TO EDINBURGH! Okay, I'm seriously not kidding, I'm sure I could convince my flatmates to let you stay for a few nights and it really is worth it, Edinburgh is SUCH a beautiful city. It's about a 4 hour trainride from london which might be a bit expensive but it is GORGEOUS. I'd be willing to bet its cooler than cardiff anyways ;) No, I'm kidding, but I'm so excited for you that you get to do this at all!!
I thinkkkkkk the best thing to do is look into travel offers, if you want to do trains, google National Rail and that's the british railway system. There might be an offer for international travelers. Also, there are very cheap buses that go all over the country. MegaBus - they are SUPREMELY cheap, I mean, Edinburgh to London for like 2 pounds, but they do take a long time to get places and they can be full of undesirable people.
It can be very expensive getting around London if you're staying there for a while, so you should also look into a cheap way of doing the tube and buses. Buses are cheaper than the underground and much better for seeing London, but can be more complicated. It might be worth investing in an Oyster card, you'll see what that is when you get there, but its easy to use and might be cheaper than if you end up paying more than you need to every day like most tourists do.
Are you going to be going to Paris? with the Chunnel train thing? I can ask my boyfriend, he might know of some good hostels there. Uhhuh.
Other than that. . . general money saving tips are cook for yourselves in the hostels, walk as much as you can, and look all over the place for good deals. Also, join the HI, if you're going to be staying in a lot of HI hostels. Book in advance, because Hostels fill up annoyingly fast. Also, trains are sometimes much cheaper if you book in advance as well. Oh, and bring your student card (if you have one, like to prove you go to the university) and ask for student discounts everywhere you go.
If I think of anything else, I'll let you know! xxxxxx
Oh, dear. Say it twice and I'm there, I assure you. Me and Mon talked about going up to Scotland but we haven't decided much yet, but if we had the chance to stay with you it'd be like WOAH CHEAP. TAKE THE CHANCE. so yeah, we would. I'd love to go, my parents have been talking for twenty years about the green grass of Scotland and the beauties of Edinburgh. And also, I need a native to show me how to pronounce 'Edinburgh' because every single English teacher I've had pronounced it differently and I'm at a lost when I try to say it. So yeah, if you're serious serious and your flatmates are okay with it, let me know because there's really not much that would keep me from going! I'm meeting Mon tomorrow evening to discuss trip details and such, so I'll talk it over with her but I doubt she'd have a problem in visiting Edinburgh at a much lower budget than London. And also, I'D SEE YOU! Oh gosh, I don't think I'd realised it's been SO LONG since I was in Basel!
Thanks for the other tips, also. We need to look further into it, but we'll surely be getting an Oyster card or something of the sorts to get around London, and we're taking as many university/student credentials as possible to try and get discounts anywhere that's possible. I'm an Arts major, I should receive gifts at museums! (no, seriously, that would be awesome) We're still not sure how we're getting to Paris, if through the Eurotunnel (that's what you mean, right?) or.. some other way. Mon got an estimated budget from a travel agency but she still hasn't filled me in on the details and such so we might, or we might not. All depends on the money, really. Pounds are a bitch. Euros, too, but compared to pounds they're actually a nice sight. And if Viljami (HA. I REMEMBERED HIS NAME. I RULE.) knows of any tips or such that might be useful, that's always welcome! Fortunately we've got contact with quite a few people who've been/lived in both cities, between people we actually know and Mon's livejournal friends and you and stuff, so I think we'll be quite alright. :)
