Subbing this week went pretty smoothly. I rocked out U.S. History at Anderson High with my knowledge of communism and capitalism. The kids even complimented me with a, "Dude...a sub who knows stuff. Awesome!" Followed by a quick "This assignment is too much reading...can you tell me what communism is in like...five words?" There was an awkward moment where I walked over to a group of students who were obiously trying to shove some weed back into their mechanical pencil which had spilled out, but I didn't actually see the stuff, so I pretended I was clueless.
I also taught a Spanish class at my alma mater...Round Rock High! It was really cool. I was in the classroom right next door to Mrs. Piscorz, who was my math teacher for three years at Round Rock. It brought back a slew of memories that I thought I had buried for good. The classes were pretty tame except for one, which compared to some of the things I've seen subbing was nothing. I had one ADD kid who drove me up the wall, but he was sweet overall. I did have to send him to Ms.P's class when he bear hugged/attacked another student and barrelled the guy out the door and halfway down the hall despite me yelling "HANDS OFF!!!" over and over.
My phrases of the week were "Don't Touch Each Other!" and "Lets be on task." The former is particularly effective when said loudly to two homophobic teenage boys who are hitting each other, but makes me feel guilty for ebrassing them like that.
I went to Ann Richard's School for Girls, which was an absolute pleasure. It's a 6-12 school full of studious little girls. They all are allowed to wear black slacks and a navy/black/white polo, but the 9-12 gradersalso are allowed to wear cute uniforms too--light blue and navy plaid skirts with light blue or white blouse and a navy sweater. Since only the older girls are allowed to wear the skirts, they all want to and do. I taught Math, which was kinda ironic, but it was just PEMDAS stuff which I rocked. Yay.
On Friday I taught art in a middle school and wanted to DIE. Six classes of insanity with a 20 min. lunch to break them up was just torture. My throat was raw and my spirits crushed by the end of the day. I got in my car and cried for a few minutes, then went home and had some ice cream and a nap.
