Jack smiled at his computer screen before turning his laptop off and placing it in his trunk next to his Bourbon.
He bounded down the steps and saw Jaden sitting on a coach. He grinned once more and jumped over the back of the couch to fall next to his boyfriend.
"Hello, my love," he said, kissing him. "David's been writing me constantly because he's so excited. It's apparently a painting about the Milky Way or some such, and you know how he's become suddenly obsessed by science and astronomy because of his new physics teacher and he's like a little child again and..." Jack paused to take a breath before he asked, "And how've you been?"
Jack smiled but his smile dwindled once he saw Jaden's face. He would like to think he was incredibly deductive but he knew that would be a lie. Jaden just couldn't hide his feelings.
"What's wrong, dear?" he asked, stroking the boy's hair.
At this point, all Jaden would have wanted to do would be to curl up in a ball and disappear. And turn invisible. Or have something happen to him that would take away the guilty feeling gnawing at the pit of his stomach.
"I- nothing, I just-" He bit his lip, casting his gaze away from Jack's face and instead fixing a spot on the couch. He took a deep breath before continuing, looking back up tentatively.
"Would you forgive me if I ever did something incredibly stupid?" he asked, hoping the tremor in his voice didn't sound as bad as he thought it did.
Jack bit his lower lip and rubbed his hand over his right cheek when he heard Jaden's voice. He gulped, hoping what Jaden was about to say wasn't as bad as he was thinking. Maybe he just lost some of the pencils I gave him or...or...or something? he thought, as his brow wrinkled.
He nodded, not trusting his mouth to not say something incredibly stupid.
You. Are. An. Idiot. He's going to hate you. Way to go.
Jaden wrapped his arms even more tightly around his knees and slid his gaze back down to the couch, not trusting himself to look at Jack for fear that he might burst into tears.
"I- I didn't mean to, but I- there was- there was this boy, and- I don't know how it happened, we were just talking, but I didn't mean to, I swear I didn't, but, h-he sort of kissed me and I kissed him back and I'm so sorry I really am I didn't-"
He finally broke off his rambling, which had gotten more and more frantic as his confession went on until the lump in his throat refused to let any other words out. He kept his gaze on the couch, trying to keep the tears in hi eyes from overflowing.
Jack looked at Jaden distraughtly. "You didn't," he said, his voice coming out higher than he intended. "You didn't," he repeated, his voice back to its regular octave.
He jumped to his feet and just stared at Jaden. "But I love you..." he said pitiously.
Jaden shook his head almost stubbornly, as if trying to wipe out this whole situation, but only succeeded in releasing the tears that flooded his eyes, causing a few droplets to drip silently across his cheek.
"I'm sorry," he said again, his voice coming out barely above a whisper. "I'm so sorry I really didn't mean for it to happen and I stopped, I did, I'm sorry, I don't know-" His voice cracked again, something between a hiccup and a choke.
He swallowed thickly, clasping his hands tightly together to stop them from shaking. "I love you...I'm so sorry..."
Jack tried to hold back his tears--he didn't know he cried--and only succeeded in morphing his face into a grotesque visage. "I can't...how can I love you if you do this to me?" he cried.
"You were my first love Jaden. I can't do this anymore." Jack suddenly gulped some air to stop his tears from falling. "I loved you..."
Jack ran up the stairs to his dorm and fell on his bed, letting himself weep. He glared at David's letter and a replica of the Tintoretto painting fell out. He grabbed it and crushed it in his hand. "I loved you."
In the common room. Come find me?
Oh really? Lucky him...

"I've been fine," he said with a small smile. "Nothing too exciting."
But then again, he'd never had much of a poker face.
