tutorials: endless & silent spring

joyfulsong asked for some precisions as to how I achieved the effects on the example icons for my last 100x100 light textures set(s), so there we go!

I'm using Photoshop CS2, but I'm sure it can easily be translated to other image editing programs. Results will of course vary depending on the original picture & textures you're using... so play around with blend modes, & see what you can get! :)

ENDLESS

I start with a blank canvas, & paste my picture on top as another layer.

I paste the light texture & make it my background layer. I set the picture layer to soft light 100%.

It lacks a bit of texture to me, so I paste yet another grey texture on top, & set it to multiply 40%. Easy, right? :)

SILENT SPRING

I start with a blank canvas, & paste my picture on top as another layer.

I paste the light texture & make it my background layer. I set the picture layer to color burn 80%.

I'd like the picture to show up more, so I paste another light texture in between my background & picture layers, & set it to screen 90%.

I'd like to give it a faint 'old' look, so I paste a grey scratchy texture on top, & set it to multiply 60%.

It's a bit too dark for my taste, so I create a new layer that I fill with white, & set it to soft light 40%... & I'm done!
