So, I play Roy as an orphan and only child. This has to do with Fullmetal Alchemist's style when it comes to parents and family, and when I say style I mean central theme. It's not like other shows where parents are mysteriously absent or never mentioned; if a character is major enough, their parents come into play. Obviously with the Elrics, their parents are completely pivotal and vital to, oh, the entire plot of the story. The same goes for Ling - we know his situation. But this rule has been consistant with the adults, too. We know Hawkeye lived with her dad, and Havoc's mom came to see him in the hospital when he was critically injured. Parents are there.
So Roy, who's like the third most major character at this juncture, has never been in contact with a parent or sibling. In flashbacks he never thinks about them, and never mentions them - he's shown telling his Master that he plans to join the military, not his parents. He didn't receive or write any letters during wartime, and is generally isolated except for Hughes. And speaking of Hughes, he was the closest Roy ever had to a family, and as far as plot goes Hughes is Roy's "family." Family is what sets the characters of FMA into action, it never fails. The Elrics were set into action by their parents, the children from Xing were set into action by their parents, Izumi and Seig tried for human transmutation because they wanted a family, and Winry grew up the way she has grown because of her parents and grandmother. Personal drive has everything to do with it, but family, in the end, is the core influence of every character in FMA. That's what makes the characters so realistic, I think.
So, Roy has never had a family. His "family," as it were, are Hughes and his men, but him having no family is pretty explanatory of his character and ideals, and how he's ended up, so that's how I play it.
So, camp family. He has two. He has Havoc and Ash, and he has Sano and Tomo. Mal he doesn't really think of as a "brother," because first of all that concept is still pretty alien to him as pertains to him (he defines brotherhood by the Elrics, basically, as should ALL WHO MEET THEM). Mal is a "friend," So them joking about being "twins" mostly has to do with their similarities, and he doesn't really see himself as having someone so close as a twin brother anyway. Hughes could have been an older brother figure - that's a superior.
I'll tackle the siblings first. so, Tomo and Seiichirou claimed him as their older brother. This really surprised him when it happened because, well, he doesn't define things in terms of family but he holds it in extremely high regard, so he really was touched. Actually, having little siblings is probably the easiest for him to conceptualize, on the whole. Being an "older brother" in their group doesn't really put him at odds with anything. While he might think "I'm just humoring them" or "I'm not open enough for this anyway," that's not a good summary of how he's taken to this. He mostly thinks, "I wonder if this is what having little siblings is like." Family is still something he's never had, didn't plan on, and only knows and defines from seeing other families - and his view on camp families is usually pretty wry. He couldn't really accept a parent or sibling his age, but two younger siblings, that's something he thought he could humor. And at this point, he really does wonder. Little siblings might be like this.
So, Ash, Excel and Havoc. This one is a lot harder.
Basically, he did not want Hughes to find out about how long he's been with Havoc because, well. First of all he'd pull his own conclusions and act like it's Really Serious and look at him like that as if something would be good for him. Hughes has always been meddling to get Roy to open up to people, and seriously I can't blame him, because Roy is very isolated and it would be nice to see someone help him out with all the weight he puts on his shoulders, and I'm sure Hughes got that impression from how Roy really needed him as a friend. BUT ANYWAY, Hughes found out, and in fact treated it like it was a Big Deal, and Roy responded like It Wasn't, Damn It. But, at the same time, he sort of got owned. BECAUSE, WELL, he can't really deny how long it's been. And when he started saying "We're prepared for going back home, where this is one of those things that needs to be secret and we're cool with that since this has always been relaxed anyway," that basically was admitting they'd uh, Planned For The Future. Ooops.
So, Roy has been with Havoc for a long time. At this point it's not so much the actual relationship as it is how long it's gone on that has Roy kind of squeamish because by common definition, length = seriousness. He's not even sure where that fact stands with Havoc at this point, and he's not used to not knowing where everything stands. BUT, as for the actual relationship, it's still comfortable and nice and he still likes it and he still sees no point in ending it. All this seriousness and Hughes' influence still REALLY doesn't weigh in on Roy's mind too badly, because his standards aren't Hughes' standards, so. Havoc is one of the people that understands his distance and drive, and he's not expecting anything, and if Havoc gets annoyed with him or decides he wants a girlfriend he's positive he'll let him know. In the meantime he's still with him, so he's giving that due credit, and OVERALL, HAVOC MAKES HIM HAPPY. Hawkeye's seriousness was a lot more welcome than Hughes' because Hawkeye was concerned with the more logical things like how this would carry out later et cetera, but it's not like he's counting on being able to keep the position of power for a very long amount of time, SIGH ROY. So he's mostly concerned with proving it to Hawkeye that he's got it under control rly. :|
SO Havoc is his casual longterm boyfriend and he's cool with that cause that's their own terms, and I think I already said something about how he REALLY DOESN'T VIEW Ash and Excel as his children nor does he think of himself as someone who would remotely make a good parent. He has no experience with parents himself in the first place except for Hughes and he seriously can't even make the faces Hughes makes at his kid. BUT, he does like dealing with them. Ash he views as more of a child than Excel because A: Excel's older and B: Excel has a super mega obsession with Il Palazzo and C: Excel is like a mercenary and kind of violent and insane. He doesn't really HAVE to look out for Excel but uh he kinda worries when she's being particularly crazy. As for Ash he. . . basically is the henpecking mom that always says no to fun shit so you go ask dad. Uh.
Basically he doesn't view Havoc, Ash and Excel as "I wonder if this is what a family is like," cause uh, no, he knows what families ought to be like and it's not like this. OF COURSE, SEE ESSAY ON WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THEY ACTUALLY LIVE DOMESTICATED AND TOGETHER IN UEKI-LAND FOR WHAT HE THINKS WHEN IT KEEPS UP. O Roy
PS while Roy thinks he'd be an awful parent if he ever really did have a child he'd be totally doting just like Hughes except he'd do less loud fawning and pictures and just be quietly owned. Seriously. He'd dote and buy a daughter anything if she hugged his arm and smiled just right and he'd set fire to all her boyfriends.
