When Ryan came to, he was hunched over on his knees. His hands and feet were bound together by tape. Walker was pacing around him in the darkness. His silhouette was dimly lit by his cigarette and the moonlight coming in from the windows. Ryan could make out little of Walker in the dim light. Walker stopped pacing when he noticed Ryan moving. “Ryan Stark,” he said. Ryan looked up at him; his entire face and body ached from the blows. He could feel the cold wetness of blood running from his nose. He struggled to try to see Walker and replied, “Who sent you Stanton? Jordan? I know you work for one of them.” Walker took a drag, pulled the cigarette from his mouth and said, “I don’t work for anyone, paper boy.” “Well you’re clever enough to work on your own.”
“You know, paper boy, I heard you got a dangerous hand on you.” Before Ryan could respond Walker walked a few steps to him, pulled his back up revolver, put it to Ryan’s head and pulled the trigger. The hammer slammed close. Ryan flinched hard. Walker smirked. The chamber was empty. “I must have forgot to finish loading. Well, paper boy, how much do you want to bet the next one works,” said Walker as he pulled the hammer back again. Another chamber turned into firing position. “You son of a bitch!” screamed Ryan. “You can kill me but…” “Let me cut in here paper boy before you give me a speech about how evil men like me will fail in the end and righteous crusading men like you will triumph and save this city with your mighty pen swords. There will always be a place for men like me in this city. We go by unnoticed but our presence will always be felt. There have been ten before me and there’ll be a hundred after me. You’re nothing, you’re more instantly forgettable than any puppet politician. There’ll be many men like you that will all strive for reckoning but be forgotten. Because you create and I destroy,” the second he finished those words was the split second that he pulled the trigger again. This time as the hammer hit it set the fire pin off into the back of a round that blew out through Ryan’s temple.
