After pimping the missing: the other day, I was asked for more chick metal pimpage. And because it is me, I'm going to do it with pictures. I’ll even recommend some specific songs.
Emilie Autumn
Just in case I haven’t pimped her enough. Seriously, Emilie is incredible. Her second album ‘Opheliac’ has recently come out and if you’re a fan of industrial you really should check her out. She’s a talented singer and plays violin like a Goddess, with her music rocking out while lyrically referencing Shakespeare along with some seriously deep shit. (Also doesn’t hurt that the woman is gorgeous and has the best fashion sense.)
Download: Misery Loves Company, Dead is the New Alive, Opheliac, Shallot, Swallow, Let The Record Show
Epica
Opera metal band from Holland. (Much along the same lines as Nightwish, Leaves’ Eyes, Within Temptation etc.) very dramatic and over-blown - as the genre tends to encourage - with soprano Simone Simons adding a nice edge to the deep growls.
Download: The Last Crusade (A New Age Dawns Part 1), Solitary Ground, Another Me "In Lack'ech", Cry for the Moon (The Embrace that Smothers - Part IV), Run for a Fall, The Phantom Agony
Lennon
Heavy rock chick Lennon doesn’t have the most trained voice, but she’s a great song writer and her voice has a husky charm to it. Her music spans from verging on true metal to beautiful stripped down acoustic songs.
Download: My Beautiful, Break of Your Car, I Hear, Couldn’t Breathe, Jacob, 5.30 Saturday Morning, Asking You
The Birthday Massacre
I’d class these guys as boppy-goth electro pop-metal. Yes. Very electronic songs about cutting people up in the basement and killing lovers in parks, all sung sweetly by singer Chibi. She’s adorable and so is their music. In that creepy way.
Download: Happy Birthday, Blue, Violet, Lovers End, Horror Show, Under The Stairs
Lacuna Coil
Italian Goth metal. Female fronted but not operatic like the other two listed on here. Their songs have a tendancy to sound similar so you’ll either like that or not.
Download: When A Dead Man Walks, Heaven’s a Lie, Swamped, Stars, Tight Rope, Purify, Lost Lullaby,
Within Temptation
In my opinion one of the best opera-metal bands there is. They lack the epic nature of Nightwish, but I find Sharon den Adel’s voice much more pleasant to listen to. Their new album is just about to come out.
Download: Stand My Ground, Running Up That Hill, Ice Queen, Dark Wings, Jillian (I'd Give My Heart), Pale, Memories
Other Bands Not Mentioned but who should still get short mentions anyway.
Jack Off Jill: I love these guys. Angry chick metal. Jessicka Fedora goes from sweet and girly to growling and screaming in seconds.
Rasputina: Mostly not really metal, but they occasionally stray there. Chicks playing cellos and writing really weird/awesome music
The Dresden Dolls Only not getting a section up there because I feel like I’ve pimped them too often. They are simply incredible. Punk-rock cabaret in their own words.
Kidneythieves: The singer from this band, Free Dominguez, is one of my favourite female voices. Kidneythieves- now defunct- were a industrial rock band from America. (Apparently they’re getting back together but currently Free is doing solo indie stuff.)
Collide: Electronic and ethereal.
Aaaand the request for bands along the same lines as Leaves’ Eyes: Angtoria, Tristania, My Ruin, Kryptoria, Xandria, After Forever, Autumn, Theatre of Tragedy, The Gathering, Sirenia, Nemesea, Midnattsol, Stream of Passion
