Well, I must say, Friday's small rehearsal was a lot less rambunctious than the previous ones. Which was certainly a relief; I don't always know my spells are going to go off as planned, and I am out of practice. But it seems to have worked, peace reigned in the auditorium, and I feel much more positive about our production being a success. Thank ( Read more... )

I wish I'd stayed back in the backroom. What if something went wrong? Shouldn't Astra and Taffy be out by now? I take another drink of my beer and glance over as someone sits down beside me.

"Hey, Heather. How's it going?" I really haven't seen her since me and Avasa got done working on the balcony for the play.

"Stefan!" I say. "How nice to run into you here. I had a free evening and thought I'd actually get out of the apartment for once."

The bartender stops in front of me and I order a rum and coke, then turn my attention back to Stefan. "Are you here...alone?" I glance around--not a sign of Taffy anywhere.

"For the moment," I say, thinking of Taffy and Astra in the back trying to save my trouble-prone ass once again. "Taf's here somewhere, talkin' to the owner's wife. They're good friends."

I take another gulp from my glass. I'm gonna need another one pretty soon.

I sigh. Oh well, guess the two really are joined at the hip or something. Still, unexpected company was nice, and he didn't seem to mind my stealing her seat for the moment.

"Oh good, two for one!" I say. "I haven't had time to drop in on her at school lately. The play's still running me ragged, for the most part." I smile and pick up my drink when the bartender sets it down. "How's the construction coming along?"

"Tiring, as usual." I signal for Willy to bring me another one, trying to keep my mind off of what might be happening in back. "Construction never changes."

I shove my empty glass to the side. "I think everybody's been busy. You'd be hard pressed to catch Taffy these days between her students and her boyfriend bein' back in town."

Ookay, not what I was expecting him to say. "Her...boyfriend? I kind of thought the two of you...um, well, you seem so close." I talk a quick gulp of my rum and coke to cover my flustered response, then add quickly, "Well, that's very nice for her, I'm sure she must be happy about it."

Heather thought that me and Taf...? Huh.

"We are close," I say, taking a sip of the fresh beer Willy hands me. "She's my best friend. I've kinda sworn off dating for a while. It never ends well." I smile and shrug. "And yeah, she's psyched. Actually, he works at the school now. You might've seen him. Teaches music."

Teaches music? Oh damn, the hot new music teacher was Taffy's boyfriend? And Stefan's sworn off dating. Great, just great. I might as well take a vow of chastity and be done with it. Some of those sleazy producers in LA weren't looking so bad right now.

"Oh, yes, I noticed him in the teacher's lounge the other day," I say, trying to hide my disappointment. "I was in a rush and didn't have time to introduce myself, but I will soon."

"So, some girl really did a number on you? Or was it a lot of girls?" I take another sip of my drink. I really ought to slow down.

"A long, long line of girls," I say. "The most recent one was the one who made me swear off dating, though." I smile ruefully. Oh well, I probably deserved it. Heaven knows I've fucked enough girls over myself, before.

I smile sympathetically. "Well, I have my own line of total jerks, we should compare notes sometime. Most recently prospective employers who wanted me to sleep with them...but you don't want to hear about them, I'm sure. And now it seems all the interesting men here are unavailable."

I finish my drink and signal the bartender for another. "So I guess it's good work keeps me so busy."
