Summary: It takes Claire all of ten minutes to realize that Dillon, Texas is the exact same as Odessa, Texas.
It takes Claire all of ten minutes to realize that Dillon, Texas is the exact same as Odessa, Texas. It’s all football, football, Friday night lights and anyone that doesn’t bleed Panther blue might as well not bleed at all.
Claire joins the cheerleading squad because she’s trying to find her way back to normal after New York City and the Petrellis. Her heart’s not in it but at least this uniform is blue and not red like Jackie’s blood on the locker room floor.
After the first practice, the squad picks their football players for the year - the ones they will “make signs” and “bake cookies” for. Claire draws Tim Riggins amid giggling and unsubtle glances towards the captain. Lyla smiles too brightly and advises her to just get beer because Tim’s a simple guy. Claire hears two girls whisper-add and sex to which Claire rolls her eyes because of course she got the sex crazed fullback.
It’s drizzling as she waits for him besides his truck. He barely gives her a second glance as he tosses his bag into the back. “I’m Claire,” she says and she doesn’t extend her hand. “I’m your cheerleader this year.”
“You new?” Riggins squints at her.
Claire nods.
“Great,” Riggins drawls, his hair lank even in the rain.
“I figured we’d start with my mama’s red velvet cupcakes and go from there,” Claire informs him, pushing herself off his truck.
Riggins nods, slowly, his eyes lingering a little too long on her wet white practice t-shirt.
Claire adds, “That’s not a euphemism. I’m not sleeping with you.”
“Didn’t ask you too,” Riggins gives her a slow smile and Claire watches it transform his face and she knows she will.
