So I tend to think of myself as a pretty intelligent person. I've always excelled in literature classes, etc. But I don't understand so much of Glamorama. I feel like a dummy. I'd ask the questions and hope to get clarification but theres so much I dont get. Like, who was working for who? Who was Palakon working for? What did the Japanese have to ( Read more... )

Who was Palakon working for?
I read it that he was working for Victor's father, orchestraiting the whole switch and getting victor out of the country

What did the Japanese have to do with it?
businessmen who had some interest in victor's father becoming president, they eventually invest in Damian's club

Who was Bobby against?
this is sorta unclear, capitalism, the system, etc. I don't think his terrorism had a point or cause, it's vapid like him, but he sees victor and victor's father as a chance to further himself.

What in the hell did the confetti mean?
like someone mentioned, this was just a plot tool to create an ominous feeling, like the chills, stench, and specks

Who the hell were the camera crews?
i view this jsut as a plot structure for the book, certainly a bit surreal, i dont think there was actually any film being made or anything like that

Was Victor downright delusional?
this kinda depends, I think you have to respect Ellis' conceit of the film crew and not count that against Victor, regarding everything else? nope

Why not just kill him in Italy if they have his doppelganger in NYC? I don't see why they need him alive.
I don't think his father could have his son killed, obviously his father is willing to replace him in order to advance his political career, which is terrible, but it's not have him killed

Also, what year do you all figure this was set in? Because if ROA takes place in say, 84, 85ish, then Victor and all would be about 30ish? give or take?
based on the celebrities and such, 1995ish

Oh yeah, what the hell is the symbolism of the specks in the very beginning?
same as the confetti

complicated question
i think there are tons of possiblities in the book, but they aren't really important, maybe Eva's family is dead, murdered by mongolian mobsters, there's no way to tell. I think what's important to come away with from her and Dan or whatever, is that people are willing to do whatever it takes to advance themselves. one can also infer based on dan's shooting skill that the two are government employees, spies or something.

Anyone else think its cool the Bret named Victors old band, The Impersonators?
hehe yeah, kinda overt. check out their website

Thanks for trying. Obviously nobody but Ellis has exact straight answers, if he even does. But your ideas are similar to what I was thinking. You really helped with my questions about Victors dad. thanks!
