The AIM Virus/Worm....
Since so many people keep coming to me asking how to fix it, and I just walked Shi through the whole process tonight, I figure I'll just post everything I told him, that way I won't have to keep typing it all out ;D cool? sweet ::wink:: so here she goes:
Gen: first let's just get rid of the link in the aim profile
Shiloh: ok, done
Gen: first, edit your aim profile to delete the link - then hit ctrl-alt-delete and end the task "b.exe" (may also be "bbb.exe")then find the same file on your computer (probably in a windows folder) and delete that
Shiloh: i dont see a b.exe
Gen: ok, so you may or may not be able to find every one of these files/folders/programs, but remove as many as possible - NOT just enough to get things working again, but try and find them all - if they're not there, then great, but I'd look for them all - the aod directory and it's contents come with a fresh install of aim and is part of the program, but not needed, so remove anyways
Gen: you might want to make yourself a list, cause some stuff will need to be removed in safe mode
Shiloh: whoa....your speakin another language here hun
Gen: directories to be removed: bargain buddy (in safe mode) - AOD - WinFavorites - FLEOK - Common Name --- files to be removed: b.exe (this is the file creating the link) - bsbb - bargains.exe - otzvsird.exe - n-CASE - url.txt - apuc.dll - winnet.exe - msgcenter_lminv1.exe - winfavorites.exe - bbb.exe - comwiz.exe - znb.exe --- programs to be removed through add/remove programs (in the control panel): PAD lookups by n-CASE - CommonName - interstitial ad delivery by n-CASE - Win Favorites - View Point Media Player
Gen: remember - if you cannot delete a file, then it's probably because it's running - you must be in safe mode or stop the program/service in order to delete it - this is VERY IMPORTANT!!! since you are running windows XP, then sometimes you can change the file permissions or re-take ownership to delete something, but in order to prevent a trial an error technique, I'd just go into Safe Mode or end the program/service - you know, just to be completely safe
