When I awoke the next morning...

There was a big ass tube down my throat. Jing-Mei was next to me, I remember that much. I tried to say something, but it felt like I was swallowing my own tongue. Apparently I had just had major brain surgery. It was weird, just a few hours before I was yelling at police officers, telling 'em I was fine. All I needed was a few stitches and I'd be on my way. Although, I'm not gonna lie, Morris did a good job with those sutures. You can only really see the scar in the right light.

It took me a little while to remember why I was there. It didn't take long for it to hit me. I had just leased that car. It was a sweet ride, but obviously not sweet enough to outrun a guy with serious road rage.

Then there was Elgin. He got hit with a bad case of wrong place, wrong time. Sometimes I think about the what ifs. What if he wasn't hit in the neck, what if I helped him out first, what if he took the El home...it never helps, really. He's gone no matter how many ways you look at it.

I moved on. A few weeks later I threw myself back into work. It kept me distracted, that is, whenever Carter wasn't up my ass about coming back so soon. But it was all just a temporary fix.

You know, I hadn't thought about it that much until recently. After Mike's death to be more specific.

Well, I guess this is life.
