About "Crash"

Yesterday night, I went to see what I believe is the first Oscar contender this year, with "Cinderella Man", of course. It was "Crash", a movie by the "Million Dollar Baby" screenwriter Paul Haggis.

The story is very similar to movies like Amorres Perros, Traffic or Magnolia, telling different stories of different people who end up running in each other. While the plot is beautifuly deployed, and even though I would've cut the story with Sandra Bullock and her maid which seemed a bit out of context, I found the movie a bit too preachy for me. We all know racism is bad, so no need to show the racist guy who has regrets about his ways as the movie goes on. Plus, this made the ending a bit too foreseeable. While there's an interesting twist, we all know from the 5 first minutes of the movie who got killed...

On the whole, the acting is really amazing. The actor that stands out in this movie is Matt Dillon as the racism cop I was speaking of earlier. Other impressive performance, Terrence Dashon Howard as the black TV director who watches his wife get sexually harassed by Dillon right before his eyes, without doing anything. I was happily surprised by the performance of Ludacris. I wasn't waiting for anything special from him, but he really did a great job.

So I'd give this movie an 8/10 and a ticket to the oscars! :)

Oh yeah, I also went to see "Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy" last week. I wasn't too impressed. The jokes were really funny, the normal witty british humor, but the story seemed a bit simple. Now I understand why fans of the book series were outraged by the movie. Plus, the acting, except for Mos Def and Sam Rockwell who blew off the screen, wasn't that impressive. One good point though, it pushed me to start reading the books, so I get a good and fair idea of the actual thing...

In other news, summer is boring...
