I'm going to admit it : I'm a true Woody Allen freak. Annie Hall is one of my favorite movies of all time, I laughed out loud when I saw Allen as Sperm #1 in Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex * But Were Afraid to Ask and I was quite impressed with what Allen was still able to do with Hollywood Ending. But then, came Anything Else. This last one was the main reason I was so afraid to see his latest flick, Melinda and Melinda. Plus, Will Ferrel had a lead role...
But, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised.
First off, I must note that this movie is split in two parts : a same story seen on a more dramatic eye and the other one on a romantic comedy eye. So, to be fair with the nature of the movie, I'll rate each part separatly.
The dramatic part
Though much of the actors in this part were good, the story is ultimatly a bit boring. At two different occasions, Melinda starts a long unwinded monologue which got me spacing out, and this is a really bad thing. When I start to space out and think of what I'll wear the next day, it's not good at all. But this only proves that Allen is better with comedy than drama.
So this part gets a 3/5...
The romantic comedy part
Earlier in this comment, I stated that Will Ferrel's presence in the movie really scared me. But, I have to admit that he actually delivers the best performance of all the movie. He's the Woody Allen for the 21st century! In this part, we clearly see Allen's signature : witty dialogues, funny situations and twists and a bumbling idiot in the lead!
Best quote ever : "A dentist is like a doctor, only oral!"
This one gets a 5/5. Yes, a 5/5!
In the end, this movie gets a 8/10...
Of course, it isn't Annie Hall, but it's far far much better than Hollywood Ending or Anything Else. Plus, Allen finally understood that, at his age, it was time to step off the screen. I mean, who wants to see a 70 y.o. man flirting with a 20/30 y.o. hot gal!
