what is the hardest thing you've ever done?

for me it was telling dark_knightly that i couldn't live with her. one moment, harder than 5 years of earning my black belt? totally. she asked me to "keep it off the internet" but i don't think she meant here; i think she meant twitter and facebook, where she still lives. here is a ghost town and since i still ( Read more... )

There certainly are different variations of "hard". Some things are challenging because of the time, knowledge, skill, etc. required. Some are difficult for emotional or mental reasons. For me, the latter are the "harder" things. Even if something takes great time, skill, etc., if I'm mentally and emotionally committed to it, it gets done. What's hard for me is getting the emotional, the mental commitment.

I'm not sure what the hardest thing I've ever done is, but I'm facing one of the hard ones today. In about an hour and a half, I'm getting a haircut. It sounds like a routine event, but I'll be having at least two feet of hair taken off. I haven't had short hair since my hair grew past being short. I don't know what it's like to have hair shorter than shoulder blade length, and I'm planning to go to between chin and shoulder. It will mean a huge change to my appearance and my daily habits and routine. I'm going into the unknown, and it'll take years to "change it back" if I don't like it. "Getting a haircut" is an easy thing to do. Committing to taking off this much hair is very difficult.

Yeah, there's "hard" in a "scary" sense (OMG, what if I regret cutting off 2 feet of hair?)

FWIW I cut my long hair short some years ago and now I must say the incredibly convenient practical benefits make me have no regrets. :)
